First of all: I think that you should buy PP for a fair share of your life Money in order to Support OOTP. It is up to you, what you define as fair share, say 10 Dollars (I spent 50).
Second of all: even with 50 Dollars you will not be in a Position to buy a whale - Team or to draw enough Diamond/Perfects - Cards to construct one. (You Can check my Team if you like, it is the Beechwood Bucaneers in Gold 285) .My guesstimate is, that you would need around 1000 Dollars to buy a whale under the condition that you have not found a way to cheat.
Third of all: there are bargains around on the Player market, Players who are worse than Trout but not much and way cheaper, may there aren“t enough whales to Keep you from at least competing in the highest leagues against beeing relegated if you use all of your wits?
Fourth of all: there are some 4000 Players around, i would assume, that even without whales I would have a hard time to compete against the best of them, whatever best means. Maybe they have much more time then me, are more intelligent, are younger, do know more about Baseball (I am from Germany), there are many set-backs I could bring fourth in order to argue why I am not winning it all.
Fifth of all: maybe PP becames boring, PP would share this fate with games like Witcher, GTA V, XCOM, ... as far as I am concerned, the Company of PP would not be too shaby then? I Play it until I start to feel bored, which is not yet the case.
