I checked and 23 of the 30 teams in my league (G286) have better career records than mine. And we're off to a wonderful start: 5-8 with awful pitching and awful defense and an awful offense.
Last season, my team was one of the top ones in pitching and had the #2 defense (def effic), but we're 14th out of 15 right now in defense and about the same in most pitching categories.
It didn't help that the AI didn't use some of my players correctly (that stopped after the 6th game, though).
