I think the ratings do matter but some of the fluctuations between a card performing well and performing awful is pretty huge at times.
I am a believer in patience. If I believe I have good players then I just let them play. I will almost never swap out and underperforming player, assuming that they will recover. My Orlando Cepeda card started out the first day with absolutely horrid numbers, including a sub .200 BA. I just stayed the course and now he is back up to around .280 I think.
Something that I seemed to notice, especially in beta, is that many times when I swapped a player, they would start off AWFUL. If it was a pitcher they got shelled. If it was a batter they would go hitless. That is when I decided to be far more patient in making moves.
