2019 Winter Meetings Day Three & Four
It was two quiet days around the Convention Center, no trades, no big signings, we were still waiting for Trevor Rosenthal to get his *** up and sign our offer sheet, Odor was gone, we got another starter... time for some bargain hunting... and eventually, were knee deep in trade negotiations with Brian Cashman.
I really respect this guy, GM for the Yankees for more than a decade, and bringer of a lot of talent and success for them. And I wanted one thing in particular: LHP Justus Sheffield. 9-8 with a 3.46ERA in 23 starts in 2019 in AAA, he was the #36 prospect in 2018 but fell off the cliff a little bit. I see a potential starter or strong lefty reliever in him.
And with all the trades, we have a surplus if AAAA starters. Enter RHSP Alex Lange(24, 1.5*) who we got from the Cubs earlier and whose changeup ratings were slashed below starter level... and RHSP Kyle Cody(25, 1.5*) who we may lose in the Rule V draft anyways... and Cashman was biting... but I wanted more...
"With Sanchez and Deglan, you are set behind the plate for years, and I need a bit more for two guys that can be MLB starters next year. Raymond Torres." - "Our second rounder for those two, plus Sheffield... nope.... I need more."
"Ok, forget Cody for a second, name me two prospects that would make you happy here." - "Seise and Allan?" - "If you give me Severino as well for that..." - "HAHAHA good one, ok, two names that are reasonable... I like Palacios and I like Vanasco."
Wow. Richie Palacios was our third rounder in 2018 and hit .311 in A+ this year... and Ricky Vanasco is a 21-year right-hander that posted a 5.78ERA in A+ and a 4.10ERA in AA, mostly in the bullpen. 15th rounder in 2017, not enough stamina for my liking, little potential...
"It's a yes on Vanasco, but Palacios... How about Michael Wilson. He is eagerly similar to Palacios, was great value as a 12th rounder, and hit .276 with good defense in single A?" - "He will do."
December 15th – The Rangers and Yankees agreed to a deal that will sent #91 prospect SP Alex Lange(24, 1.5*), A 2B Michael Wilson(21, 0.5*) and AA RHSP Ricky Vanasco(21, 0.5/2*) to New York for #175 prospect LHRP Justus Sheffield(23, 2.5/3*) and prospect C Raymond Torres(19, 0.5/4*). Both sides are very happy with the trade.
I am, because we sent a throwaway 2B and two pitching prospects with major flaws away for a good lefty that would be our only lefty starter, and a hot(?) catching prospect.
