Uhh yeah, you can avoid it. Just don't do it?
I have no intention of spending any money on packs (defeats the whole purpose of the fun of upgrading for me), and I suspect I'll still have a strong team after a few seasons.
Play some challenge mode too, and get some occasional packs there.
