2018/19 big offseason roundup
Changes, Changes:
The first signing was an easy one. I wanted a veteran manager. One that knew how to win. And one that brought at least some excitement to the fanbase. Enter Joe Girardi. The former Yankees manager agreed to a 2-year deal and we went to work right away.
Also, I wanted some talented baseball minds around me... and signed Doug Melvin as Head of Scouting for four years and upped the scouting budget to a maximum of $24M, and the development budget to a maximum of $36M.
Free Agents and Non-Tendered Arbitration Candidates
3B Adrian Beltre(39, 3*) .257/.336/.434 15HR 58RBI 108G 1.9WAR
Compensation eligible. At his age, he has no immediate future with the team... and while fans and the owner will hate it, he won't be resigned. Good luck to him, but we will save the money.
SP Cole Hamels(35, 2*) 7-14 5.03 106K 32GS 177IP 1.2WAR
No interest at all.
P Kevin Jepsen, Matt Moore, Scott Kazmir, Doug Fister, Tim Lincecum, Shawn Tolleson, Jake Diekman
3B Trevor Plouffe, C Robinson Chirinos, LF Ryan Rua, C Cameron Rupp, CF Delino DeShields Jr.
Were either free agents right away, or were non-tendered during arbitration. Got us some roster space, and freed up some more money.
Extensions:
SS Jurickson Profar(25, 2.5/3*) .239-7-43 .644OPS 124G 6/8SB -0.3WAR
1y/$1.32M
Trade candidate. We are set in the outfield, and his shortstop defense is lackluster at best. Candidate for 'flip'.
RF Nomar Mazara(23, 4/5*) 165-3-7 .508OPS 34G -0.7WAR
1y/$850k, Signed a $10y/120M extension kicking in in 2020.
Buy low candidate on a long-term extension. Suffered from a lat strain that cost him most of 2019, but regarded as one of the prime outfield prospects in baseball.
LHCL Alex Claudio(27, 4.5*) 1-10 34SV 2.66 55K 67.2IP 2.1WAR
1y/$4.64M
3 more years of team control, and a lot of talent despite throwing only 83-85 mph. Our closer for now.
RHCL Keone Kela(25, 4/4.5*) 4-3 2SV 3.03 83K 68.1IP 0.2WAR
1y/$1.54M
Strong right-hander, two more years of team control, setup man for a good price.
Free Agent Signings:
C Matt Wieters(32, 2.5*) .291-10-62 .768OPS 124G 2.8WAR for WSH
1y/$2.9M
A bargain, and an important one as we basically had nothing left behind the plate that resembled MLB quality. Also, could be a good trade chip at the deadline if he performs like last season.
Trades, Trades, Trades:
The 'Flipping Strategy'. At the start of free agency, we had a ton of money available, and there were a number of teams looking to sell their veterans and stars in the final year of their contract, for almost nothing.
With our team looking to rebuild, the plan was easy... take the player for a player that we want to get rid of anyways, and then eat his salary, and flip him for a prospect... Watch:

Boston receives:

Texas receives:
RF Daniel Johnson Jr.(23, 2/3.5* HS, 1.5/2.5* OSA)
Makes $21M of Rick Porcello on our payroll for three prospects. Elvis Andrus was the guy that had to go, and no offense to him, he was a great servant to the club, but how much of a value will he be in 2-3 years when we hopefully compete again?
