That was a great idea. Fun following along.

If you had bought the players you pulled on the AH, it would have cost you around 30K PP, so you probably came out a bit behind (although after selling all the junk cards you might have enough for another pack to open, so who knows). Plus you might have been able to tailor your roster more in the AH.

The flip side is you didn't have to wait around for auctions to end and delay earning more PP with a better team. And opening packs is a lot more fun than baby-sitting multiple player auctions.
