I'm 55-35 in AA. I've gotten 1 silver achievement and 39 bronzes so far. I'd guess, just at a glance, that I've earned about 2500 pp this year. 4-5000 a year is about what I've been earning as a 90-105 win team. In other words I get a fairly steady stream of bronzes as a good team, but nothing outstanding. 3-4 silvers a year and a boatload of bronze.
Looking at all this, I think that putting out a team strictly to earn pp is a very viable strategy. It's probably at least worth 4000 extra pp in a season, and if you have a lucky game or two, you might end up with a lot more than that. The best part about it, ofc, is that it doesn't take a big investment of time like the AH, or any real money either. It's very efficient. And if you know what you're doing, you could accomplish it without sucking too badly.
After the beta, I'm certainly going to experiment. I wanted to try and earn tons of pp with shutouts and "throwing Madduxes" and the like. Honestly I'm not comfortable running a team of lumberjacks that win games 11-10. I don't think I've ever even tried to manage such a team before. But it does look like offense is the way to go.
Markus/Lukas - was this the original intention with the achievement points? Not that they'd be tied directly to on-field success, but that they'd encourage more 'theme' teams? That's not a complaint. I'm really asking where the achievement rewards are trying to direct players to.
