This is just how the auction works.

Whatever amount you enter in the box is your maximum. If it's more than the current high bid, it won't all be applied immediately. Just enough of it to move your bid to be the highest bid. The rest is held in reserve and you'll only have to pay it if someone else ups the bid.

In your case you were the guy upping the bid, but you weren't beating the other guy's maximum bid.

Basically it works the same way as eBay.
