There was no consensus. We have also adjusted the pack odds a little since the closed beta.
Basically, buying more regular packs gives you more chances at the top cards. 5x1k packs vs 1x5k pack simply gives you more chance at diamonds.
But the Gold pack guarantees you one gold, and you still have chances for more. I'm also not sure how the auction will play into this, too. There's certainly some gold cards which I would guess can be sold at auction for a nice return. But then again, if the card you want is up for auction, then you can bid up to 4k and still have 1k to spare to buy a pack to give you the chances at other cards.
It's really going to be interesting to see which strategy will win out.
