Rain began to fall in the top of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, right after Doolan stole his 10th base of the season, the game was paused for a 66 minute rain delay. Upon restart, Beebe walked Titus to load the bases with one out. Bransfield then beat out the 5-4-3 and Thomas was able to score the game's first run.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Cubs loaded the bases with two out but Beebe flew out to center to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Evers tied the game with an RBI double. After a pair of intentional walks, the Cubs had the bases loaded with one out. Kling then gave the Cubs the lead with an RBI single. Hofman then lined back to the pitcher for the second out. Then Moran grounded to third to end the inning.
After six: Chicago 2 Philadelphia 1.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Bob Wicker took the mound for the Cubs.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cubs had a runner on first with one out. Bill Duggleby took the mound for the Phillies and he got Steinfeldt to ground into the inning ending 6-4-3.
In the top of the ninth, Doolan hit an inside the park home run with a man on base to give the Phillies the lead. The top of the ninthended with Wicker striking out Titus to record his 20th K of the season.
Harry Kane took the mound for the Phillies in the bottom of the ninth. The Cubs put the tying run on second but pinch hitter Pete Noonan grounded to third to end the game.
Final score: Philadelphia 3 Chicago 2.
