WORLD SERIES GAME 1
Wood, Chicago Start World Series Strong with Home Win
The Chicago White Stockings started the World Series in style today, downing the visiting Philadelphia Athletics at Union Base-Ball Grounds by a score of 8-6 to stake an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. White Stockings second baseman Jimmy Wood was named player of the game after he was 3-4 with 2 triples and a double, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3.
The White Stockings took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Facing Philadelphia hurler Rynie Wolters with two outs, Wood hit a run-scoring triple.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Wood. "And not try to do too much."
Game 2 is set to be played tomorrow in Chicago. The scheduled starters for the game are Rynie Wolters for Philadelphia and Bill Stearns for Chicago.
