Over the next five days, the Chicago Cubs will play the Pittsburgh Pirates six times, with the first five being in Pittsburgh. This series begins with an Independence Day double header. The Cubs lead the season series 5-4 and have won four straight against the Pirates. The Cubs will be trying to end a three game losing streak.

In the top of the first, Evers led off with his 10th double of the season. But he would be caught stealing third.

In the bottom of the third, Wagner picked up an RBI on a groundout to third.

After three: Pittsburgh 1 Chicago 0.

In the top of the fourth, Slagle delivered the game-tying RBI single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Wagner swiped third for his 25th stolen base of the season. But he would be stranded there.

After six: Chicago 1 Pittsburgh 1.

In the top of the eighth, the Cubs had runners at the corners and went for a squeeze play but Schulte could not make contact and Sheckard was tagged out at home.

In the bottom of the eighth, Leach put the Pirates on top with an RBI single.

In the top of the ninth, the Cubs put runners on first and second but Evers popped out to short to end the game.

Final score: Pittsburgh 2 Chicago 1.

Ganley led off the bottom of the first by striking out for the 20th time this season. But Ritchey would come through with a run-scoring double. Leach then added a two-run triple. Leach went on to score on a Clarke groundout to second.

In the top of the second, Steinfeldt was caught at second by Peitz. It was the 10th time this season Peitz caught a base stealer.

In the bottom of the second, Wagner got an RBI single. The Pirates then loaded the bases with one out. Ritchey added a 2-run single.

After three: Pittsburgh 7 Chicago 0.

The Cubs finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as Schulte scored from second on a throwing error by Wagner.

In the top of the sixth, Sheckard led off with a double but was injured sliding into second and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Solly Hofman. Hofman would go on to score on a Steinfeldt single.

In the bottom of the sixth, Beaumont got his 10th double of the season. He would be stranded at second.

After six: Pittsburgh 7 Chicago 2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ganley hit a two-run triple.

In the bottom of the eighth, Leach hit a sacrifice fly to record another RBI.

In the top of the ninth, a Slagle single scored one.

Final score: Pittsburgh 10 Chicago 3.
