STOLARSKI AND STONICH ARE BEST IPA ROOKIES
It was a bumper crop of new talent in the Islandian Pro Alliance this season... competition for the best newcomer trophies was keen and fierce... when the final ballots were counted, the 2057 Ruthlandian Union Rookie of the Year Award was presented to Valmara's standout shortstop Alek Stolarski and the 2057 Tycobbian Union Rookie of the Year Award went to Rolling Hills' fine freshmen first baseman Teddy Stonich.
In his debut season Alek Stolarski sparkled in 147 games with a .302 BA, 11 HR, 70 RBI and 108 runs... the 24-year-old was solid in the field, too... Stolarski was a part of the Vipers' terrific turnaround year, rising up from fourth place in the RU North Division to capture the pennant and winning more games than any other team in the IPA with a 96-58 record.
Coming in second in the Ruthlandian top rookie voting was Kip Drumm, Fort Benton's center fielder, who led the Defenders to their first-ever RU West Division flag... Drumm, just 20 years of age, played in 144 games, batted .315 with 7 homers, 65 RBI, 92 runs and 15 SB... he made the All-Star team and covered center field like a gold glove... winding up in the third spot was Taranto's 21-year-old first sacker Buddy Lark, who posted a .316 batting average in 130 games with 28 roundtrippers, 68 runs and scored 75 runs... the Tars finished in fourth place in the Ruthlandian North... Lark played very well on defense, too.
The 2057 newcomer of the year in the Tycobbian Union, Teddy Stonich, had a marvelous first year in Rolling Hills at age 23... his Reds shot up from fourth place in '56 to the runner-up spot this year... they were beaten out by in a sudden-death playoff by Denton City for the TU West title... in his initial season Stonich made the TU All-Star team, put up a .307 BA, hit 36 out of the park (4th-tied in IPA), drove in 121 runs (2nd in IPA) and scored 109 times (2nd in IPA).
In a very tight vote, Stonich edged out two strong contenders to take the trophy... the number-two votegetter, Weldon Herrington, had an outstanding year with High Mesa at age 21, leading the Mustangs to a close third-place finish in the super strong TU East... they were just one and a half games behind powerful Pro Cup champ Red Bluff and mighty Midway... Herrington, an All-Star, recorded a 23-9 mark (4th in TU) with an impressive 2.77 ERA (9th in TU)... his totals included 22 complete games and 6 shutouts... Red Bluff's great rookie, Duane Sturgeon, and Herrington led the IPA in shutouts... ending up a very-close third for the Rookie of the Year award was another prized Red Bluff rookie, Paul Gaddison... what a great introductory season he had for the remarkable Red Sox... the 23-year-old center fielder compiled a .299 BA with 27 home runs, 94 RBIs, scored 99 runs and stole 16 bases, while solidly covering the outfield... in a sensational season Red Bluff just barely beat out Midway and High Mesa for the TU East pennant and then went on to win the IPA Pro Cup for the second time in the club's history.
