GOLD SLINGER TROPHIES GO TO LONG AND TIMMS
One of the Islandian Pro Alliance Golden Arm Award winners should be home with his grandkids and the other one is hardly dry behind the ears... at 37, James Long of the Middlefield Roosters is still pitching like he did almost 20 years ago... actually Long is better now than he was in his early years... for the 9th successive season the famed Rooster right-hander had a chalked up 20 or more victories... in fact Long has won that number 13 times in the last 14 years... once again Long has been touted the Ruthlandian Union Golden Arm... this is his 5th time to be honored... he also won it in '50, '54, '55 and '56... Long hasn't given up the trophy now for the 3rd year in a row... maybe it's time to rename the award... lifetime he is now 405-227 with a brilliant 2.65 ERA... Long is the all-time IPA-winning pitcher, currently 14 victories ahead of the retired Frankie Blair and the still active Matt Bell.

Enough about ancient history and what James Long has done in the past... this year he was 24-10 with a strong 2.65 ERA in 39 starts, leading Middlefield to a third-place spot in the RU West race... he had 17 complete games and posted 4 shutouts.

The 2057 RU Golden Arm beat out some young arms for the best-twirler trophy... he edged out second place Homer Lawler, who posted a superb 20-4 mark with a 2.72 ERA in 27 starts for the Eastshore Cotton Kings... the Cottonpickers came in third in the RU East standings... third in the voting was Zeke Yoder of the Fort Benton Defenders... Yoder sparked the Defenders to their first RU West pennant, topping third-place Middlefield by 4 games... Yoder was 20-10 with a fine 2.74 ERA, 218 Ks in 269 IP, 19 CG and 3 shutouts... fourth place went to Yanni Bubas of the Ancona Red Elephants... he stood out with an impressive 21-12 record and 2.93 ERA for a sixth-place club... Lawler is 26, Yoder 31 and Bubas just 22... altogether this trio has put up 248 wins, compared to Long's 405.

Now we need to cover the young'uns in the Tycobbian Union... the 2057 Golden Arm went to Tuckanarra's 22-year-old Ian Timms, who really blossomed in his fourth season with the club, going a magnificent 26-5 and charting a great 2.24 ERA, second best in the entire IPA... only Dickie Parmenter of Turon was better with a 2.12 ERA... Timms tossed 3 shutouts and fanned 209 batters in 310 innings and tied for first place in victories, despite playing for the fifth-place Blue Jays.

Nobody was close to Timms in the TU Golden Arm polling... but 7 other twirlers got votes... (2nd) at age 28 Dickie Parmenter paced Turon to the TU South division title with an 18-7 mark and a brilliant 2.12 ERA...(3rd) 22-year-old Maury Statler tied Timms for wins... he was 26-10 with a 2.94 ERA for Oxford, which won the Tycobbian North... (4th) rookie Duane Sturgeon, only 23, led Red Bluff to the Tycobbian East title with a 22-12 record and a 2.90 ERA... (5th) 25-year-old East Point's Eddy Winbourne was 21-13 and 2.40 in his second year... the Panthers were fourth in the TU East... (6th) at 22, Carl Coons compiled a 21-14 mark, coupled with a strong 2.58 ERA for the Denton City Redbirds, who won the Tycobbian West this season... (7th) another rookie phenom, Weldon Herrington, recorded a 23-9 season and a 2.77 ERA at the young age of 21 for the third-place High Mesa Mustangs in the Tycobbian East... (8th) and finally, 9-year vet Flash Stringfellow went 24-12 with a 2.82 ERA for Denton City... Stringfellow was the old one in the bunch at 29.
