06/25/1978 - Kingman Slugs Cubs to 10-5 Win

Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman was instrumental in his team's 10-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Kingman, who is tied for 2nd in the NL in runs scored with 48, went 2-3 with 2 homers (both off RHP Ron Reed) and 3 runs scored to lead the offensive attack for the Cubs. Mike Krukow, who went 8 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 5 runs on 7 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 6. His record now stands at 7-8. Even with the win, the Cubs have a dismal 23-47 record.

The Cubs got a big at-bat from third baseman Steve R Ontiveros. For the game, Ontiveros was 1-4, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the top of the fifth, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a run-scoring single. His 68th hit of the season gave Chicago a 6-5 lead.

"We'll savor this win," Kingman told the Chicago Gazette, "then get ready for the next game."
