New York starter Jon Matlack had a strong outing against the Montreal Expos at Shea Stadium. The left-hander was a big part of his team's 3-1 win. Matlack got the win, improving to 5-0. He allowed 6 hits and walked 0 over 7 innings. Matlack allowed 1 earned run. The Mets raised their record to 14-4.
Dave Kingman, who is tied for 5th in the NL in extra base hits with 8, aided the New York cause with a solo home run in the bottom of the third off LHP Dan Schatzeder. For the game, the first baseman went 1 for 4 with a home run.
"Feels good to get the job done," Matlack said after the game.
