When the games really matter, the Cincinnati Reds put on their best show, beating the New York Mets by a final score of 7-6 today. Bruce Boisclair earned player of the game honors, as he went 4 for 5 with a double and 3 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Cincinnati now leads New York 1-0 in the best-of-5 affair.
The Reds were down to their final out when right fielder Pete Rose Sr turned a full count curveball from Rick Baldwin into a bases-clearing double. The walk-off double made the Riverfront Stadium crowd go wild.
In postgame comments, Rose Sr said, "I think we gave the fans their money's worth."
Game 2 is set to be played tomorrow at Riverfront Stadium. The scheduled starters for the game are Tom Seaver for the New York Mets and Jack Billingham for the the Cincinnati Reds.
