07/03/1976 - Seaver Throttles Cubs, 5-1

New York Mets starter Tom Seaver was in a groove as he led his team to a win over the Chicago Cubs, 5-1. Seaver picked up the win for New York, going 7 innings. He gave up 1 run on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 8-9. Bob Apodaca converted his 11th save in 15 tries.

The Mets got a big at-bat from second baseman Wayne Garrett. For the game, Garrett went 1-2 with 2 walks. He drove in 2 runs. In the bottom of the sixth, with runners on 2nd and 3rd, he stroked a 2-run single. His 70th hit of the season gave New York a 3-1 lead.

"We'll grab a cold one tonight and go after another win tomorrow," Garrett said.

Kingman homered off releiver LHP Buddy Schultz.
