August 31st-September 6th
August 31st, 2028: Atlanta will be without SP Juan Ochoa for the rest of the year with shoulder inflammation. Acquired from St. Louis in the Rece Hinds deal, he's 1-1 in 7 starts with a 5.06 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 32 innings.
We're headed home to face the Mets for three. We'll see Sergio Fuentes (4-1, 4.70 ERA), Jhoan Duran (5-10, 3.53 ERA), and Arturo Romo (7-8, 5.47 ERA).
September 1st, 2028: Rosters expand today, so I made a few callups. I recalled Luis Alcantra from his rehab assignment and recalled RF Mike Siani and RHP Alfredo Herrera from AAA New Orleans. Herrera was just named August Pitcher of the Month, gonig 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 34 innings (6 starts).
GCL lefty Sean Clark was named Pitcher of the Month in the GCL. A former Rays 4th ROunder, he was 2-0 with 4 saves at 7 strikeouts in 9.2 scorless innings.
We opened the Mets series with Jorge Flores (9-11, 4.11 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) taking on Segio Fuentes (4-1, 4.70 ERA) as we looked to snap our little losing streak. It took 12 innings, but Jarred Kelenic hit a walk-off single off Cal Couglin to win the opener 4-3.
Flores went 7 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs, a walk, and 8 strikeouts. Joe Kramer got the win, 2 innings with 2 strikeouts.
Kelenic was 3-for-6 with the game winning RBI. Chris Reid was 3-for-5 with a walk, solo homer, and 2 runs scored. Mac Horvath was 2-for-5. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-6 with a two run homer. Juan Simental had a pinch hit triple in the 10th with none out, but we stranded him. Jackson Miller was 1-for-5 with a double.
September 2nd, 2028: The Milwaukee Brewers have been the first team eliminated from the postseason. At 47-87, they are 30.5 games out of first place.
The middle game saw Devon Peterson (11-9, 3.78 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) take on Jhoan Duran (5-10, 3.53 ERA, 1.13 WHIP). There was a ton of scoring, and we topped the Mets 9-6.
Peterson went 5 innings with 5 hits, 4 runs (1 earned), 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Ignacio Hinojos got a hold, 1.1 innings with a hit, run and 2 strikeouts. Jordan Montgomery allowed a hit (that later scored) to the only batter he faced. Riley Ferrell and Trevor Gott also earned holds before Chad Scoles got the save.
Jackson Miller was 3-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, and 2 walks. Juan Ramirez was 3-for-5 with 2 runs, 2 RBI's, a steal, and a homer. Daylen Lile was 3-for-5 with a pair of steals, runs, and RBI's. Chris Reid was 1-for-3 with a double, run scored, RBI, and walk. Mike Siani was 1-for-4 with a run scored, walk, and steal.
September 3rd, 2028: I recalled RHP Cho-yeong Hyoun from AAA.
We looked to finish the sweep with Jake Florence (9-2, 3.72 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) taking on Arturo Romo (7-8, 5.46 ERA, 1.54 WHIP). A 4 run 7th was critical to the sweep and we finished the finale 6-3.
Florence went 6 innings with 8 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 8 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra got the win, getting the final out of the 7th. Alfredo Herrera allowed a hit, walk, unearned run, and strikeout in 0.2 innings in his major league debut. Riley Ferrell and Chad Scoles got holds before Ignacio Hinojos got the save.
Jarred Kelenic was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, 2 runs, and 3 RBI's. Mac Horvath was 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch and run scored. Juan Simental was 1-for-4 with a double, run scored, and 2 RBI's. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Noah Smith was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Juan Ramirez had a pinch hit double in the 7th and later scored.
The Brewers come to town and will send Victor Mederos (5-10, 5.73 ERA), Lucas Sims (4-8, 3.92 ERA), and Charlie Neeper (5-15, 6.20 ERA) to the mound.
September 4th, 2028: I recalled Sam Minniefield from AAA.
Greensboro 1B Jon Carpenter was named South Atlantic Player of the Week. He hit .462 with a homer and 6 RBI's.
Cubs starter German Marquez is out for the year with bone chips in his elbow. He was 5-8 with a 3.87 ERA in 93 innings with 86 strikeouts.
We're stuck in 2nd in the Power Rankings. At 85-52, we have a playoff percentage of 99.9% and we're slowly inchind towards clinching. We're the only team in the MLB with 80 or more wins (St. Louis has 79) and have the biggest division lead (6.5). Washington, who's in 2nd, would be first in every division except the NL Central.
With an off day in the horizon, we opened the Brewers series with Steve Paustian (13-5, 3.54 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) facing Victor Mederos (5-10, 5.73 ERA, 1.51 WHIP). The pitiful Brewers crushed us 10-3 to open the series...
Paustian allowed 8 hits and 6 runs in 5 innings with 4 walks and 7 strikeouts. Herrera couldn't get an out, and was charged with 2 runs, a walk, and hit. Jamie Priest allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 2 innings with 4 strikeouts. Blayne Enlow went 2 innings with 2 hits, a walk, and 4 strikeouts.
Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Chris Reid was 1-for-3 with 2 runs and a solo homer. Juan Ramirez was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Astros 1B Steve Sparks extended his hit streak to 20 games. He's in no relation to the former pitcher.
September 5th, 2028: Since New Orleans did not make the playoffs for the first time since 2020, I was able to make the remainder of my callups today. Heading to the big league roster is Leonel Olvera, Zaire Moneyham, Roberto Pena, Dermott MacGregor, Eric Kisela, and Sergio Tello. Ayden Hardamon has 1 day left on the DL and will come up tomorrow. I transferred Joseph Jarneski to the 60 to make room for the eventual activation of C.J. Jorgensen. Palban Gamboa had 4 weeks left on the DL.
I wanted to purchase the contracts of SS Rogelio Maldonado, LF Bob Poulson, CL Jeremy Reller, RP Esteban Miranda, RP Jorge Luna, and SP Chris Bigsby, but I didn't have any room and didn't want to DFA anyone. They will all likely (except maybe Luna) earn 40 spots in the offseason.
We looked to even the series up with Luis Ardon (10-4, 3.24 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) taking on Alfredo Riera (2-3, 2.41 ERA, 0.88 WHIP). We got 3 quick runs in the 1st, and it was enough for a 4-2 win.
Ardon went 6.1 innings with 5 hits, 2 runs (1 earned), and 6 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra earned the hold and Trevor Gott got(t) his first save of the season. Alcantra tossed 1.2 innings with 4 strikeouts and Gott allowed a hit and walk while striking out the side in the 9th.
Noah Snith was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Daylen Lile was 1-for-3 with a double, walk, and run scored. Juan Simental was 1-for-3 with a two run homer and sac-bunt. Ardon was 1-for-3 with an RBI double. on the season, he's 4-for-39, but with 3 doubles. 5 of his 8 career hits are doubles.
Sparks' streak was snapped at 20.
September 6th, 2028: Ayden Hardemon joined the big league club as we looked to win the rubber match. Jorge Flores (9-11, 4.10 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) took on Lucas Sims (4-8, 3.92 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) in a battle of 34-year-olds. It was a close one, but we managed to edged them 2-1 to take the finale and the series.
Flores went 7 innings with 3 hits, a run, and 4 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra notched a hold and Chad Scoles recorded the save.
Daylen Lile was 2-for-3 with a walk and solo homer. Jackson Miller was 1-for-2 with a double, run scored, and walk. Noah Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Tomorrow is an off day before the Nationals come to town.
