November 1st, 1884 - Mathews Delivers, Athletics Win 1884 World Series!
November 1st, 1884 - The White Stockings scored 2 runs in the first inning, but after that Bobby Mathews did not allow another baserunner to cross Homeplate, and the Philadelphia Athletics won game 3 by a score of 3-2. The win marked Bobby Mathews second Championship, having won with the Providence Grays in 1879. It was however his first World Series win, and it was also the Athletics first World Series win, but their 4th championship.
The win also marked the first time that the American Association has won a World Series. In the end, Lon Knight's gambit paid off. By resting Mathews for game 3, he was able to outduel Larry Corcoran. Congratulations to the Philadelphia Athletics!
