October 29th, 1884 - Mathews Strikes Out 19, Athletics Win Game 1
October 29th, 1884 - Bobby Mathews was Bobby Mathews vs. the White Stockings, and after striking out 19, the Philadelphia Athletics have won game 1 of the World Series by a score of 5-2. In the top of third, Mathews got out of big jam when the White Stockings loaded the bases with 1 out. It took a force out throw to home, but Chicago failed to score. Game 2 is tomorrow, and the Athletics on paper have said that Charlie Hilsey will be their starter, but we'll have to see on game day if they remain true to that.
Mathews set an American Association playoff record with his 19 K's.
