06/15/1972 - Pirates Again Rally For Late Win Over Giants
The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the San Francisco Giants, 5-4, at Three Rivers Stadium. Pittsburgh third baseman Richie Hebner was named player of the game for his superb performance. He belted 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. Steve Blass got the win, improving to 4-2. He pitched 8 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs, while striking out 9 and walking 4. Ramon Hernandez, credited with the save, is now 6 for 7 in save opportunities.
Hebner had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a 1-0 fastball from Jerry Johnson, he banged a 2-run home run to right, giving the Pirates a 5-4 lead. It was the 16th home run of the year for Hebner.
