July 20th-July 27th

July 20th, 2028: We opened the four game series in San Diego with Devon Peterson (9-5, 3.19 ERA, 1.24 WHIP) facing Josh Hearn (4-12, 5.17 ERA, 1.45 WHIP). The Friars got 4 in the 7th and took the opener 8-5.

Peterson went 6.2 innings with 8 hits, 7 runs, 6 walks, and 3 strikeouts. The last run was charged to Jordan Montgomery who allowed 2 hits before finishing the 7th with a strikeout.

Daylen Lile was 3-for-5 with a run scored, double, triple, and 2 RBI's. Isaac Nunez was 2-for-3 with a two run homer and walk. Jackson Miller was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored. Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-2 with a double and 2 walks.

July 21st, 2028: We looked to even the series with Steve Paustian (8-4, 3.69 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) facing former Marlin minor leaguer Logan Shore (3-12, 8.73 ERA, 1.58 WHIP). He's had a terrible season, but didn't pitch too bad in the 7-1 Marlins win.

Paustian tossed a gem, 8 innings with 3 hits, a run, walk, and 5 strikeouts. Blayne Enlow pitched the 9th, walking 1 and striking out 2.

Juan Ramirez was 3-for-5 with a run scored, 2 RBI's, 2 doubles, and a triple. Jackson Miller was 2-for-4 with 2 runs, a double, and walk. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Daylen Lile was 1-for-3 with a run scored, 2 walks, and a steal. Chris Reid was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Mac Horvath was 1-for-4 with a walk.

July 22nd, 2028: I extended SP C.J. Jorgensen to a 1-year, $2,580,000 contract, that should prove to be a bargain. "Kid" is a solid starter that should be able to return stronger from his injury.

The Padres acquired CF Jorge Lozano from teh White Sox for LHP Misael Garcia. It's a steal for the Padres, although Lozano isn't really that good, it's just he's much better then Garcia.

Lozano was not in the lineup today, as we looked to take the series lead with Jake Florence (7-1, 3.05 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) facing Jim LaJoie (7-7, 3.76 ERA, 1.15 WHIP). The pitching on our end was brilliant, and we shut them out 6-0.

Florence tossed 6 innings with just 1 hit, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Jamie Priest tossed 2 innings with a hit, walk, and 3 strikeouts. Blayne Enlow tossed a perfect 9th to end the combined shutout.

Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-3 with 2 runs, a walk, and solo homer. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4. Juan Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Florence was 1-for-2 with a sac-bunt, double, and RBI. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-3 with a walk, steal, solo homer, and 2 runs scored. Daylen Lile was 1-for-5 with a solo homer.

Braves 1B Freddie Freeman hit his 500th career homer. A Brave since 2010, he has a career .283/.381/.515 triple slash with 1,563 RBI's in 2,587 games. The former 2nd Round Pick by Atlanta in 2007, the 38-year-old is an impending Free Agent, but I can't seem him leaving Atlanta if he doesn't retire.

July 23rd, 2028: The Braves sent RHP Michael Doolin to the Astros for 3B Josh Smith. I like this deal for the Astros.

We looked to take the finale with Luis Ardon (7-3, 3.16 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) taking on Jake Webb (3-5, 5.09 ERA, 1.49 WHIP) before we get our first off day since the break. The Padres got 5 in the 1st, but we tied it by the 4th. In the 7th we scored 2, and took a 7-5 lead into the 9th. They got 2 off Scoles on a Mike Holler pinch-hit double to force extras. In the 13th, Isaac Nunez hit a two run homer off Josh Ferland, who was in his 3rd inning, and we won the finale 9-7.

Ardon was hit hard, 2 innings with 7 hits, 5 runs, a walk, and a strikeout. Priest tsosed 2.1 innings with 2 hits and 2 strikeouts. Enlow tossed 1.1 innings with a hit, walk, and 3 strikeouts. Trevor Gott got a 2 inning hold, allowing 2 hits and striking out 2. Scoles allwoed 3 hits and the 2 runs in the 9th, but he struck out 2. Jordan Montgomery got the win, 2 innings with 3 hits, a walk, and 2 strikeouts. Riley Ferrell pitched a perfect 13th to get the save.

Padres LF Jeremy Green was 6-for-7 in the losing effort.

Tomorrow is an off day where we'll head home before hosting the second place Nationals for three.

July 24th, 2028: Down in the GCL, RF Curt Walsh won Player of the Week, hitting .467 with 7 RBI's. It's nice to see the 2026 1st Rounder hitting well, even if it is down in the GCL.

We moved up to 2nd in the Power Rankings. At 63-36, we have a nice 7 game lead over the Nationals, our next opponent.

A pair of trades were agreed upon today, first with the Indians acquiring C Tyler Solomon from the Brewers for LHP Pete Carreras. It looks like a steal for Milwaukee.

Oakland added RHP Tim Shaw from the Reds for RHP Patrick Raby and LF Danny Wade. I guess it's a minor salary dump, but it looks like a great deal for the Reds.

Looking ahead to our series with the Nationals, we'll host Gage Hinsz (8-2, 3.51 ERA), Sonny Warner (7-3, 3.23 ERA), and Steve Vincent (4-5, 3.23 ERA).

July 25th, 2028: Jorge Flores wants an extension, but I don't have the money to offer him. He wants almost $30 million a year and I have a little over $20 million to offer. Most of that money will likely go to Mac Horvath as well.

We opened the Nationals series with Flores (6-10, 4.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) taking on veteran Gage Hinsz (8-2, 3.51 ERA, 1.18 WHIP). The Nats jumped ahead with a 3 run 6th and took the opener 4-2.

Flores went 6 innings with 6 hits, 4 runs, a walk, and 7 strikeouts. Riley Ferrell pitched 1.2 innings with 2 hits and 2 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra went 1.1 innings with a walk and 2 strikeouts.

Noah Smith was 2-for-4 with a walk, run scored, and steal. Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and walk. Jackson Miller was 1-for-2 with 2 walks.

July 26th, 2028: The Reds acquired LF Khalil Lee from the Athletics for RHP Luis Guerrero and LHP Nelmerson Angela. This is a trade of scrubs, but Guerrero is the least scrubiest (and youngest) so adantage Oakland.

We looked to even the series back up with Devon Peterson (9-6, 3.51 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) battling Sonny Wanrer (7-3, 3.23 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) in a likely pitcher's showcase. The home fans left dissapointed, as the Nats topped us 7-4...

Peterson went 4 innings with 9 hits, 6 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts as his slow second half continues. Jamie Priest tossed 3 innings with a hit and 2 strikeouts. Trevor Gott allowed a hit, walk, and run in an inning with a strikeout.

Jackson Miller was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's. Chris Reid was 2-for-5 with 2 runs. Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-4 with a doubel and run scored. Noah Smith was 1-for-3 with a walk, double, and run scored. Mac Horvath was 1-for-3 with a walk. He continues to have his interesting season, with a .301/.438/.356 slash line where he has 79 walks and 17 extra base hits.

July 27th, 2028: We needed to avoid the sweep as Steve Paustian (9-4, 3.52 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) looked to beat Steve Vincent (4-5, 3.23 ERA, 1.17 WHIP). We looked like the 64 win team we are today, and we salvaged the finale with a 6-1 victory.

Paustian was fine, 6.1 innings with 4 hits, a run, 5 walks, and 3 strikeotus. Jordan Montgomery, Riley Ferrell, and Luis Alcantra earned holds, and Blayne Enlow struck out the side (with a walk) in the 9th.

Looking at Montgomery, he's done well out of the pen, working a 1.59 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 22.2 innings with 17 strikeouts. While not rate stats (other then ERA), he's been able to work well enough with his diminsihing stuff by getting a lot of ground balls and limiting walks.

Noah Smith was 2-for-3 with a solo homer, walk, and 2 runs scored. Juan Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a two run homer. Ian Happ had a pinch-hit, 2 run double in the 8th. isaac Nunez was 2-for-4 with a steal, run scored, and RBI. Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-4 with a steal.

The Padres are next, as they'll come to town for three. We'll face Dominic Pipkin (1-3, 5.04 ERA), Jake Webb (3-5, 5.40 ERA), and Charles King (7-8, 4.62 ERA)

Before moving on, I wanted to take a look at Mac Horvath's seaosn so far:

Of 162 qualifying hitters, Horvath ranks #2 in OBP (.436) behind just likely MVP Xavier Carter, but 147th in slugging (.364). He's tied with Bryce Harper for most walks (80), and dead last in ISO (.065).

It's hard to measure a player like Horvath's value (he is 3.0 in WAR, 117 in OPS+), because he's not necisarilly a one dimensional player, although he plays like an old school player, walk/single and then steal second (14-for-14), with absolutley no power (14 doubles and 3 homers), but he's still driven in 45 runs while offering elite defense at the corners. His season has really been an interesting statistical anomoly, even off his standards.
