June 12th-June 18th
June 12th, 2028: I made an excellent waiver claim, claiming 19-year-old CF Juan Simental off waivers from the Diamondbacks. He's rated a 2.5/5 with batting potentials of 78/95//100/80/61. He's got plus ranged and elite speed. He's out of options, so I have to keep him on the big league roster, but he's actually hit well this year, .254/.270/.469 with 7 homers, 26 RBI's, and 3 steals in 130 at bats.
I optioned RF Palban Gamboa to AAA and DFA'd LF Matt Hogan.
1st Rounder's Mitch Castro ($850,000) and Josh Vest ($750,000) agreed to their signing bonuses. Vest's ratings fell off a cliff, and now looks like a bad pick. 3rd Rounder Sergio Arenas will head to college officially.
Down in AAA, 1B Sean Taylor was named Player of the Week. He hit .500 with 3 homers and 9 RBI's.
And just like every other week this year, we rank 1st in the Power Rankings. At 45-19, we have a nice 4.5 game lead over the Nationals who rank #2.
We started the home and away series at Marlins Park as Steve Paustian (6-2, 2.82 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) took on Juan Jacobo (4-4, 3.94 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) and the Yankees. Simental will hit 7th and play CF in his Marlins debut. The pitching on both sides was solid, and we topped them 4-2 in the opener.
Paustian went 7 innings with 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Jordan Montgomery and Luis Alcantra got holds before Chad Scoles struck out the final two batters to earn his 15th save.
Mac Horvath was 2-for-3 with 2 runs, an RBI, 2 doubles, and a walk. Jackson Miller was 1-for-4 with a steal. Noah Smith was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Simental was 1-for-4 with a double, run scored, and RBI in his first game with us. Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-4 with a double.
Former Astro prospect Franklin Perez tossed a no-hitter against his former team as the Rockies topped Houston 7-0. He struck out 9 and walked 2.
June 13th, 2028: 4th Rounder Pat Rice agreed to a $260,000 signing bonus.
We finish the home portion of the home and away with the red-hot Jake Florence (4-1, 3.38 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) taking on Juan Figeruoa (2-2, 5.68 ERA, 1.52 WHIP). We got four in the second, and cruised to a 8-1 victory.
Florence went 5 innings with 4 hits, a run, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Sam Minniefield got a 3 inning save, striking out 6 and allowing 2 hits.
Roberto Pena was a perfect 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and 2 RBI's. Jackson Miller was perfect 3-for-3 (although 1-for-2 on steal attempts) with 3 runs, a RBI, and walk. Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Noah Smith was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI's. Mac Horvath was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Daylen Lile was 1-for-4 with a run scored, steal, and RBI.
We're off to New York for the 2nd two, and we'll see former Marlin Slade Cecconi (3-2, 4.25 ERA) and Nick Pivetta (2-3, 10.31 ERA).
Down in Greensboro, LF J.J. McCowan was 5-for-5 in a 8-4 win over the Hickory Crawdads.
June 14th, 2028: The Angels will be without RHP Anderson Espinoza for the year with a torn labrum. He tossed 12 innings with 12 strikeouts and a 4.50 ERA.
The first in New York saw Luis Ardon (4-1, 2.09 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) take on Slade Cecconi (3-2, 4.25 ERA, 1.09 WHIP). We got 4 in the 9th, but it wasn't enough, and the Yanks defended homefield with a 10-7 win.
Ardon had a rare rough start, 4.1 innings with 7 hits, 5 runs, and 3 strikeouts. Blayne Enlow tossed 2 innings with 3 hits, 3 runs, a walk, and a strikeout. Minniefield tossed an inning with 2 hits and a run. Roberto Pena allowed 2 hits and a run in 0.2 innigns.
Chris Reid was 4-for-4 with 3 runs scored and a hit by pitch. Mike Siani was 2-for-4 with a walk and grand slam in the 9th. Isaac Nunez was 2-for-4 with a sac-fly and 2 RBi's. Jon Reid was 2-for-4 with a hit by pitch and RBI. Ian Happ was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored. Mac Horvath was 1-for-3 with a run scored and 2 walks.
June 15th, 2028: I outrighted Matt Hogan to AAA.
We looked to take the finale with Jorge Flores (4-6, 4.14 ERA, 1.17 WHIP) taking on the struggling Nick Pivetta (2-3, 10.31 ERA, 2.39 WHIP). Both teams have their DH's hitting 9th (Jon Reid and Tyler Malone). Not exactly sure how we lost, but the Yankees evened the finale with a 7-2 win.
Flores tossed 6 innings with 10 hits, 5 runs, a walk, and 8 strikeouts. Riley Ferrell tossed 1.2 innings with 2 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and 3 strikeouts.
Jarred Kelenic was 1-for-4 with a double. Isaac Nunez was 1-for-4 with a double and RBI. Noah Smith was 1-for-3 with a walk and RBI. Ian Happ was 1-for-4 with a double and run scored. Daylen Lile was 1-for-3 with a walk and steal.
Former Marlin and current Dodger RF Austin Hendrick hit three homers in a 14-3 win over the Rangers.
We're off to Cincinatti to face the Reds for three. We'll face Mike Kuhns (2-2, 3.03 ERA), Dallas Wollfolk (4-4, 3.20 ERA), and Esteban Aguirre (3-3, 3.61 ERA).
June 16th, 2028: Trevor Gott is headed to A+ Jupiter to begin a rehab assignment.
We opened the series against the Reds as Devon Peterson (8-2, 2.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) looked to stay hot against Mike Kuhns (2-2, 3.03 ERA, 1.04 WHIP). We couldn't score, and they edged us 2-1 in the opener.
I don't think we're going to be #1 next week...
Peterson went 5 innings with 5 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeotus. The pen tossed 3 innings with a hit, walk, and 5 strikeouts.
Chris Reid was 2-for-4 with a solo homer. Peterson was 1-for-2, and Happ, who replace him, was 1-for-1. Mike Siani was 1-for-3.
June 17th, 2028: Nationals RHP Thomas Hackimer will miss the rest of the year with a torn flexor tendon in his elbow. He had a 6.16 ERA in 27 relief appearences.
We really need to get back in the groove, as Steve Paustian (7-2, 2.80 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) looked to beat Dallas Woolfolk (4-4, 3.20 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). We gave up 3 in the 8th, and lost 5-4 for our 4th straight loss. Wow...
Paustian went 6 innings with 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Luis Alcantra allowed 2 htis, a walk, and 3 runs in 0.2 innings with a strikeout.
Daylen Lile was 2-for-5 with a solo homer. Noah Smith was 2-for-3 with a run scored and RBI. Mike Siani was 2-for-4. Ian Happ was 1-for-3 with a solo homer, 2 runs, and a walk. Chris Reid was 1-for-3 with a walk and double.
June 18th, 2028: I optioned Sam Minniefield to AAA and recalled Danny Niewald from his rehab assignment.
1st Rounder Josh Norrod agreed to a $600,000 signing bonus.
Fan vote update: Jackson Miller is 3rd for catcher. Mac Horvath is 3rd for first. Chris Reid is 2nd for third. Juan Ramirez is first for left. Jarred Kelenic is 1st for right. Devon Peterson is 1st and Steve Paustian 4th for starters.
I'm guessing the team is tired, and luckily we have tomorrow off. But first, Jake Florence (5-1, 3.28 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) looks to end the losing streak against Esteban Aguirre (3-3, 3.61 ERA, 1.23 WHIP). We got 5 in the 4th, and won the finale 6-1 to avoid the sweep. I think this 3-4 week is our first losing week of the year.
Florence went 6.1 innings with 2 hits, 3 walks, and 5 stirkeouts. Riley Ferrell tossed an inning and allowed a hit, 2 walks, and the only run.
Jarred Kelenic was 2-for-4 with a double and run scored. Isaac Nunez was 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. Roberto Pena was 1-for-4 with a three run homer. Mac HOrvath was 1-for-4 with a hit by pitch, RBI, and a pair of steals. Daylen Lile and Grant Koch were 1-for-4 with a run scored.
We really need to take an off day, our first since May 25th, and we'll head home to prep for a home series with St. Louis. We finished that stretch 14-9, although we lost four of the last five.
