GM’s notebook - Series 44 and 45

Magpies 2-1 Santa Fe
Magpies 10-8 Santa Fe
Magpies 1-6 Santa Fe
Magpies 10-7 Baton Rouge
Magpies 5-4 Baton Rouge
Magpies 4-3 Baton Rouge

- Cory Adams is back from the DL, but I’ve put him into the bullpen (Allen Clary has been sent down). Ronald Williams (3-0, 2.02) has pitched well as a starter while Adams has been out, and will keep his rotation place for now.
- Two of the league’s best pitchers squared up to each other when Tom Hart took on Outlaws ace Donnie Lee in the series opener. The game was predictably tight, and Tadamichi Hamada’s solo HR in the top of the 9th frame edged it for us.
- With Ernesto Solís and Ángel Márquez both hitting homers and doubles, we jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the top of the 5th inning in game two. But Santa Fe fought back to 10-8 after the 7th, and we needed Ken James’s 35th save of the season to see us to the win.
- It looks like Robert Terry’s expected regression may be kicking in. 4 runs on 6 hits over 5.2 innings gave him the loss in the final Outlaws game.
- Márquez hit 3-3 with a HR and 4 RBIs, and Pedro Soto smacked 4-6 in the 10-7 victory in Baton Rouge. We had been 7-3 behind after 4 innings.
- Earl Becker hit a homer and a double as we wrapped up the sweep against the four-time defending Western League champion Deltas.
- Montgomery’s hopes of a fifth straight SCL title are surely over. They have slumped to 62-73 and are 10 games behind Tallahassee in the South East Division.
- That excellent road trip has pushed us 3 games clear of St. Paul in the North Division, which we lead for the first time this year. But the race remains extremely close, as the Brown Bears are only one game further back.

This week: 5-1
Record: 77-58, 1st place, 3 game lead over St. Paul
