Checking in on some of the big names from the offseason

This past offseason saw a number of big name free agents flip teams. Let’s take a look at how they are doing for their new squads.

Tom Hopps
Hopps won the Shield of Ares award last year, given to the best relief pitcher. He signed a 31 million dollar contract with the Fateu Blaze. So far this season, Hopps is 7 for 7 in save opportunities, with 3 wins as well. However, is 2.7 ERA would be a career high, if the season ended today.

Jim Hoffman
The former Hadrian United star lost the Globe of Atlas trophy to his teammate last season, and went for greener pastures in Itar. So far the move hasn’t been kind to him. The league leader in home runs last season, Hoffman has gone long just 3 times this season, and is on pace to have his worst home run hitting season of his career.

Brice Brown
Brown turned his post season performance last season into a huge payday in the offseason, but so far he hasn’t lived up to his paycheck. Brown does lead the Kobol College Twins in RBI with 13, but the slugger has hit just 4 home runs and is putting up a .5 WAR.

Scott Auchnie
Caprica City picked up Auchnie to replace Brown when he left for Kobol College. That move seems to be about neutral as Auchnie’s numbers are pretty similar to Browns. Auchnie has 5 homers, 16 batted in, and is hitting .250

Randy White
White took a big contract to be the ace for a struggling Ersia team looking to replace Carl Conner. White had a great season in 2020, but looks to be regressing in 2021. He’s 1-4 in 6 starts. While the Elephants are almost notorious for their lack of run support, White’s 4.47 ERA isn’t helping his own cause any either.

Carl Conner
Speaking of Carl, the best worst pitcher in the league with Ersia last year took a big contract with the Kobol College Twins. Now that he's finally getting some run support, the numbers are turning around and he is earning that spot at the top of the rotation. Conner is 4-1 in 6 starts with a 1.70 ERA.

Manus Emery
Finally, Manus Emery was an interesting offseason story, as he was one of the oldest free agents available, yet felt he could make star pitcher money. He did eventually sign a 1 year, 10 million dollar deal with the Olympia Racers. But, as reported a few weeks ago, Manus tore his UCL in a start with the Racers, and faces Tommy John surgery. At 43 years old, most agree it will be a career ending injury.
