1977 NHL Playoffs
1st Round
As you can see from the seedings, these playoff matchups are not correct again. After winning 17 straight playoff series, the
Toronto Maple Leafs drop their 2nd in a row! 12 seed
Atlanta, the lowest seed in the playoffs, advance. They should have been playing
Toronto, but got a break playing
Philly.
2nd Round
That’s not a typo, the
Rangers beat
Atlanta 12-1 in two straight games!
Hartland Monahan scored five goals for
New York in game four!
Buffalo provides the biggest upset of the 2nd round, getting 3 straight overtime win, en route to beating Norris division champion
LA Kings!
3rd Round
#1 Ny Rangers vs #8 Buffalo Sabres
Game one is what we call a marathon that never ends! The
Rangers go up 2-1 after a period.
Pete Mahovlich’s 2nd goal of the game gives
NY a 3-1 lead, but
Buffalo is able to tie it in the third, with a
Willy Lindstrom goal. We need overtime. The two teams play 20 more minutes without a winner. They play a 2nd 20 minutes, and nobody scores. A third overtime is needed, and halfway through, it’s
Brian Glennie, getting a goal at the 110:10 mark of the game, winning it, 4-3, for the
Rangers! The two tired teams played a sloppy game two, as can be expected.
Terry O’Reilly, having a very nice playoff, opens the scoring with his 5th. The teams combine for 6 goals in the 2nd period, ending with a 4-2
NY lead. After cutting the lead to one,
Buffalo’s Gerry Hart scores short handed to tie it, and force overtime! They only need 5 minutes to finish this one.
Syl Apps jr scores for the
Rangers. 5-4 final score!

Glennie ends game one in the third overtime!
Hartland Monahan scores his 10th to give the
Rangers a game three lead.
Gary Bergman and
Bert Wilson add to that lead, which the
Rangers never relinquish. 3-1
New York wins. One game away from a sweep.
Jude Drouin’s first goal of the series gives the
Sabres a badly needed game four lead.
Bobby Orr ties it in the third, but
Buffalo gets a 2 goal response, giving them enough leeway to squeak out a 3-2 win to stay alive!

Hartland Monahan has 10 goals so far!
In game five,
Peter Stastny’s early marker gives
NY a 2-0 lead.
Buffalo fights back, and
Bill Barber would tie it before the end of the period. After exchanging goals in the 2nd,
Brian Glennie scores a go ahead goal for
NY in the third. The
Rangers then kill the last 13 minutes of the game, suffocating the
Sabres offense.
NY wins 4-3, and take the series in 5!
#2 Cleveland vs #6 Pittsburgh
The underdog
Penguins jump out to a 2-0 lead scoring twice in 83 second span.
Rick Kehoe and
Denis Potivin fight back for the
Barons, tying it, but
Pittsburgh has an answer.
Terry Harper gives the
Penguins a lead they would not let go of. 3-2
Penguins win game one.
Marcel Dionne opens the scoring of game two, and the
Penguins coast from that point. They lead 3-0 after a period, and win it 7-3!
Dionne finishes with 3 points. Is an upset brewing?

Dionne leads Pittsburgh to an easy game 2 win!
Game three sees no scoring until the third period.
Cleveland’s Dale Hoganson and
Pittsburgh’s Don Luce score 2 minutes apart. That’s it for the third. The two teams need overtime.
Hoganson turns out to be the hero, getting his 2nd of the game.
Cleveland wins game three, 2-1. Game four starts with
Dale Hoganson scoring again…and again. He gets two first period goals, while teammate
Mel Bridgman adds another.
Rick Kehoe makes it 4-0 in the 2nd, and the rest is just elementary. 5-2
Cleveland ties the series.

Hoganson with four goals in games 3 and 4!
Denis Potvin keeps the momentum going for
Cleveland, scoring in the first.
Bobby Clarke manages to tie the game, and it stays that way until the dying seconds. With 42 seconds remaining,
Marcel Dionne pots the winner! 2-1
Pittsburgh. With the
Pens one game away from a trip to the cup, they start poorly.
Rick Kehoe’s 12th gives
Cleveland a lead. It’s 2-0 after the first, and 4-1 after the 2nd.
Rick Kehoe ended up with 2 goals, as
Cleveland forces a game 7 with a 4-2 win.

Kehoe leading the Barons!
Game 7
Morris Lukowich opens the scoring by beating
Jiri Crha 8 minutes into the first. 1-0
Pittsburgh.
Mel Bridgman tips a
Borje Salming point shot in to tie it at one late in the first. Right off the draw in the 2nd period,
Pierre Mondou breaks in and beats goalie
Doug Favell on a real fluky shot. The goal occurs 3 seconds after the opening faceoff. 2-1
Cleveland. That’s the only 2nd period goal.

Mondou scores 3 seconds into the 2nd!
Denis Potvin scores 5 minutes into the third, making it 3-1
Cleveland. The
Pens do not go away.
Bobby Clarke finds a rebound and puts it behind
Crha, cutting the lead to 1 with 12 minutes to play. The
Penguins outshoot the
Barons 7-0 over the final 10 minutes, but can’t find the net.
Cleveland wins 3-2 to win the series in 7!
