February 1st, 1884 - Fleet Walker to be First African American Major Leaguer
February 1st, 1884 - The Toledo Blue Stockings of the Union Association bring with them Catcher Fleet Walker, which sets Fleet up to be the first African American to play in the major leagues. It is not expected that all players are going to welcome Fleet into the league with open arms. In 1883 the Blue Stockings played an exhibition game against the Chicago White Stockings. At first, White Stockings manager Cap Anson refused to play with Walker in the lineup. He eventually conceded when faced with the prospect of not getting his share of the gate receipts.
We'll be following Fleet closely throughout his 1884 campaign to see how things go.
