July 18th-July 25th
Real life side note: I really can't comprehend this Machado deal... What an awful return for the Orioles! I know it's better then nothing, but 1 top 20 prospect, 3 lottery tickets, and a minor league journeyman? I know it's OOTP, but man, my return was much, much better. And I'm not personally a fan of Diaz, and I'm pretty sure the Dodgers notice something in him like the Nationals did with Giolito. Oh well, only time will tell...
July 18th, 2019: We opened the last series of the first half at Guaranteed Rate Field with All-Star hopeful Aaron Sanchez (8-5, 2.80 ERA, 0.90 WHIP) facing Carson Fulmer (0-0, 2.16 ERA, 0.96 WHIP). I considered trading for Fulmer (Michael too), but Lopez is the better pitcher. It was a close one, but we edged them 7-5.
Sanchez went 6 innings with 4 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and 7 strikeouts. Blake Treinen blew the save and got the win, a hit and a run while striking out the side in the 7th. Jake Diekman and Boone Logan got holds before Zach Britton got the save. Diekman allowed a run off a hit while getting an out.
Cahnce Sisco was 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. Nolan Arenado was 2-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 RBI's, a walk, double, and homer. Anthony Alford was 1-for-5 with a double and RBI. Jose Peraza was 2-for-5 with a run scored, RBI, and steal. Trey Mancini was 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Alex Cobb wil head back to the DL with back tightness...
July 19th, 2019: Shelby Miller (7-6, 3.39 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) took on Lucas Giolito (2-11, 8.90 ERA, 1.79 WHIP) in the second game. We hit five homers in the 15-4 crushing of the Chi Sox.
Miller went 5 innings with 8 hits, 4 runs, a walk, and 4 strikeouts. Drew Pomeranz tossed 2 innings with 2 hits, a walk, and 4 strikeouts. Joakim Soria went 2 innings with a hit, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts.
Nolan Arenado was 3-for-4 with a pair of walks and solo homers. Jonathan Schoop was 3-for-6 with 2 runs and 4 RBI's. Trey Mancini was 3-for-6 with 2 runs, 3 RBI's, a double, and homer. Lewis Brinson was 2-for-6 with a double and solo homer. Yolmer Sanchez was 3-for-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, and a walk.
Adrian Beltre hit his 500th career home run in a 10-7 Blue Jays win over the Red Sox. He is a career .287/.342/.480 hitter with 1,781 RBI's in 11,635 career at bats.
Tyler Wade's hit streak ended at 26.
July 20th, 2019: Erasmo Ramirez (2-4, 3.86 ERA, 1.33 WHIP) looked to bounce back after a rough start against Josh Tomlin (4-8, 4.33 ERA, 1.24 WHIP). We got six in the fourth, and topped them 7-5.
Ramirez went 5 with 5 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Alex Colome, Bryan Shaw, Jake Diekman, and Boone Logan got holds and Zach Britton got the save. Britton allowed a run and hit with 2 strikeouts in the 9th.
Jonathan Schoop was 2-for-4 with a homer and 3 RBI's. Trey Mancini was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 runs scored. Yolmer Sanchez was 1-for-4 with a three run homer. Victor Reyes was 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Jose Peraza and Nolan Arenado were both 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.
July 21st, 2019: The 2019 All-Stars were announced today. Representing the Orioles will be SP Aaron Sanchez (1st, technically 2nd, but for some reason the game doesn't register his 2016 All-Star appearence), RP Joakim Soria (4th), CL Zach Britton (3rd), and C Chance Sisco (1st). The only other guyS that could've earned a nod would be Jonathan Schoop (.256/.322/.556, 29 homers, 73 RBI's) and Trey Mancini (.272/.331/.530, 22 homers, 70 RBI's).
The Tigers will be without CL Chasen Shreve for the year wtih a damaged elbow ligament. He was 5-2 with 5 saves and a 3.72 ERA in 38.2 innings.
The Reds sent LHP Matt Grace and SS Travis Odom to the Phillies for RHP Joe Ryan and 1B Jack Zoellner. I like this deal for the Phillies.
We look to finish the sweep to finish the first half with Reynaldo Lopez (7-3, 3.87, ERA, 1.24 WHIP) facing his former team and teammate Lance Lynn (3-0, 3.96 ERA, 1.20 WHIP). We crushed them 10-3 to finish strong before the All-Star break.
Lopez went 5 with 3 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and 9 strikeouts against his former team. Colome, Diekman, and Treinen earned holds. Treinen went 2.1 innings with 2 hits, 3 walks, and a strikeout.
Nolan Arenado was 3-for-5 with a homer, walk, and 2 RBI's. Jonathan Schoop was 2-for-5 with 2 runs, 4 RBI's, a homer, and sac-fly. All-Star Cahnce Sisco was 1-for-4 with 2 runs, 2 walks, and a double. Jose Iglesias was 2-for-4 with a run scored, RBI, and hit by pitch. Victor Reyes was 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. Lewis Brinson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and walk.
We finished the first half 56-40, 3 games out of first and with a 4 game lead for the 2nd Wild Card.
July 22nd, 2019: Jonathan Schoop was named Player of the Week. He hit .438 with 4 homers and 13 RBI's.
We're also all the way up to 2nd in the Power Rankings.
July 23rd, 2019: The All-Star game was today, as the AL saw Shoehi Ohtani (12-3, 2.63 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) take on the NL and Jose Quintana (15-2, 1.77 ERA, 0.97 WHIP) who is having an insane season. The NL team also looks much better. It took 10 innings, but the AL scored 1 in the top of the 10th to take a 8-7 lead. Sadly, the NL got 5 in the bottom half and they won 12-8.
Zach Britton got the loss, 6 runs in 1.2 innings with 5 hits, 3 walks, and a strikeout. Aaron Sanchez allowed 4 hits and 3 runs in 0.2 innings. Joakim Soria got a hold, but threw just 1 pitch and he got a ground out. Chance Sisco was 1-for-2 with a walk.
July 24th, 2019: I spent today working on trades. I ended up sending pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Lucas Long to the Angels for SS Andrelton Simmons with 45% of his salary retained.
Add another to the list of repeat offendors! Simmons, 29, is controllable until 2020, and as everyone knows, is the best defenisve shortstop currently, and possibly ever. He's a great hitter with great athleticism. He's hitting .284/.318/.362 with 5 homers and 30 RBI's in 387 at bats this year.
I'd most likely add another arm tomorrow.
Down in the GCL, 1B Alex Binelas went 5-for-6 in a 14-5 win over the Yankees West.
July 25th, 2019: I sent SS Jose Iglesias to the Cardinals for SP Miles Mikolas and his entire contract retained.
Mikolas, 30, is eligible for arbitration after this year, and has been great since returning form overseas. This year, he was 7-4 with a 3.48 ERA and 1.36 WHIP with 89 strikeouts in 19 starts.
We'll head home to host the Phillies for three games. We'll see Jake Arrieta (7-7, 3.14 ERA), Zack Wheeler (5-6, 5.87 ERA), and Nick Pivetta (6-8, 4.42 ERA).
