As the Group 1 tournament semi-finals shift venues, the 1948 Indians take the lead in their series against the 1970 Orioles behind the great pitching of young lefty Gene Bearden (1-0, 1.80). Bearden got a complete game shutout, holding the Orioles to 5 hits (all singles) while striking out 2 and walking 4 in a 3-0 victory. Dale Mitchell (.415, 1, 7) and Joe Gordon (.296, 3, 6) each went 3 for 4 in the victory for Cleveland.
In Game 3 of the N.L. semi-final series, Atlanta scores a big win at home, 12-5 behind the potent bats of the Jones boys. Chipper Jones (.315, 4, 5), who was awarded Player-of-the-Game honors, went 3 for 3 with 4 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and hit his 4th homer of the tournament. Andruw Jones (.338, 5, 12), meanwhile, was 4 for 6 with 1 runs scored and 3 RBI, hitting his 5th bomb of the tourney as well as his 3rd double. Atlanta takes a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
