I don't think being able to play out games as the players would have a detrimental effect on the sim. What I'm saying is you would incorporate both, with the option to chose either style based on the user's preference.
As for the sim only being as good as your skills for mashing buttons, the individual player ratings play a big effect. I never win out all the time, loose quite a few games. The staple for me is the pitching strategy, and pitch placement. My teams as a whole generally hit below .250.
Which I can understand as being directly correlated to my skills, which after years are disappointingly sub par, but there is a degree of variance incorporating the players ratings and skills also.
And I am not some Modern console gamer, and have no interest in P2P online games. I despise the fact Madden has gone graphics over AI, and convenience of gameplay. I stick to PC, and the ever trusty PS2 for my Madden and NCAA kick.
To be perfectly clear now that I look back to the reason for my post, I was simply playing some console MVP2005 last night and thinking, wow, wouldn't it be awesome to play OOTP like this with all the depth and modification that it provides? Playing MLB, Minors, International, NCAA, HS Feeders all in one awesome world, on one game?
A man can dream, can he not?
