Week 24 recap

9 games to go and most of the picture is crystal clear.
Joe Vertz will very likely take home a triple crown barring a huge slump or some massive hot streak. Juan Flores will need to get busy if he wants the single season SB record of 90.
Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas Ohio and we appear to be the 5 teams getting to play some October ball in the AL.
In the NL Pittsburgh, Washington, San Antonio, and KC appear to be the NL locks and lookie lookie. Pre-season favorite San Diego, who tanked the first 1/3rd of the year are within 2. LA slumping at the worst possible time. I thought the Missions were red hot but it turns out they weren't. Just 42-34 since July 1st they've watched the storm go 32-44 over that same stretch to pick up 10 games.

SCHEDULE:
3 @ Chicago
3 vs Minnesota
OFF DAY

RESULTS:
  • 9/21: CHI 9 FLA 5 Alatorre L (12-8 3.66) 4.2 IP 6 H 7 ER 3 BB 5 K Christman 2-4 3B (1) HR (13) 2 RBI (33) Flores SB (81) Hallamore SB (54)
  • Former Tarpon Leith Southorn won his 18th game today by shutting out New York 10-0 on a 3-hitter., he punched out 10 and walked just 1. He's 18-10 4.67. Leith was part of a huge trade with San Francisco in which we acquired Jon Naclerio and Harland Bolduc as well as their #1. He was dealt 2 years later to the Phantom for SP Ethan Collins.
  • Joel Aris (WAS) won his 19th game striking out 6 in a 9-0 win over Austin. He's 19-6 3.53
  • Denver axed manager Marc Roubik. Roubik had been with the Saints since 1996 and managed them since 1997. He has been part of 3 world championships, 2 as bench coach in Jacksonville and he took the Saints all the way in 2004 winning manager of the year. The Saints are dead last in the AL West at 63-91 which is on pace to be the worst season in franchise history. No replacement has been named. Bench Coach Tim Graff will manage in the interim.
  • We face perennial Koufax winner RJ Stanton tomorrow.
  • San Diego has closed to within just a single game of LA in the NL West.
  • 9/22: CHI 2 FLA 0 Stanton POTG CG SHO (16-5 3.18) 3 H 2 BB 8 K Shelley walk-off 2R HR off Grab
  • Willoughby ND 8 IP 5 H 1 BB 6 K
  • That makes 2 starts, 18 innings 7 hits and 0 runs vs Stanton this year. Here's hoping we don't see them after September.
  • Federico Escobedo (PIT) scattered 4 hits en route to a 2-0 win over Oklahoma. He's 9-9 4.62
  • Chicago clinches the central with the win and Ohio clinches the 2nd wild-card spot. They will meet Detroit in the play in game.
  • 9/23: FLA 8 CHI 3 6 run 9th. Pollock ND 7 IP 6 H 3 ER 1 BB 4 K Adams PH 3 R 2B (13) Hayashi 3-4 HR (15) 2 RBI (56)
  • Denver has hired ABA legend Kevin Allison to take over the club as their next manager. Allison is just 41 years old. This is his 1st managing job at any level but word is he's going to be an outstanding one. He took home the 1992 MVP after hitting .314-37-122. He retired with 454 career home runs and 1385 RBI's with a career slash line of .280/.423/.511 in 2334 games. He is the all-time leader in runs scored with 1692, 2nd all time to Domenic Loetzsch in OBP, 7th all-time in hits, 6th in total bases (4309) 9th in 1B (1358) 2nd in 2B (503, retired 3 shy of the leader Andy Greene) 19th in home runs 7th in RBI's, 3rd in walks (1603) and 2nd all-time in WAR at 82.9, one of just two players with 80+ Career WAR (Mike Trout the all-time leader at 94.9). He retired in 2005 and will be eligible for the HOF ballot next year. He won 4 silver sluggers in LF, 4 postseason series MVP awards, he was an 8 time all star and 2-time world champion (1994 with Jacksonville and 1999 with LA) where he won the MVP in both world series.
