For follow up...

After playing a few more seasons, I have determined that the issue I was experiencing was related to the defense ratings of my outfielders. I’m not sure about the mechanics, but I suspect that since I had a left fielder with a 35 DEF and a CF with 70 DEF (80 point scale), the CF was “covering up” my LF. Dropping down to a CF with DEF 50 was enough to have serious negative consequences for my pitching. I don’t think it would have been an issue if my LF was an average or better defender. Getting a better defense CF resolved the issue. Fortunately the game reinstated the DH in the AL and I can DH that LF and things look even better.
