July 10, 1878 - The Cincinnati Reds have released Lip Pike, choosing instead to go with the younger Buttercup Dickerson in left field. Pike was promptly picked up by the Providence Grays. Pike will bat cleanup and play right field for Providence. At 33 years of age, Pike is on the back end of his career, but he is still batting .285 with 3 homeruns and 23 RBI's this season.
