sorry, no EASY way for certain. but as with most things in this game, if you're willing to put in the effort - there usually is a way. as far a i know, to use the import historical player function you need to tell the game the player's ID and the year ... 
maybe post your idea of being able to select players via drop down menus in the board for suggestions:

the developers might be able to do something along those lines if they get enough feedback.
