I use OOTP strictly for historical replays plus creating projects spanning baseball's history. I have never touched the GM options because I don't want to be a front office "suit."
I am creating "Best of Franchise" universes that I will post here as Quickstarts. As for replays, I am replaying 1922, 1934, 1967, and 1991. I manage each game for the team I am manager of.
I play 11 different baseball sims and I do all of them as replays. I love them all for different reasons but OOTP is king. Thus far, anything I can imagine in terms of creating baseball universes I can do in OOTP.
You mentioned the learning curve and really it's not that steep. It APPEARS to be a steep learning curve only because this game is quite comprehensive in what you can do. What I would suggest is that you create an historical universe. When you play, just pay attention to the Manager's Office section. That is what got me past the "holy crap this game is REALLY hard to navigate" feeling. After you play a few games, jump to the League option and just look around until you're comfortable. Do the same with the other options. In no time you'll be an OOTP pro!!

PS: OOTP is amazingly accurate. Diamond Mind used to be the sim that baseball writers would use to forecast seasons. OOTP now has that coveted spot. I will go so far as to assert that OOTP is not only the best baseball simulation on the market, it is also the best SIM of anything on the market. I hope you'll join us!!
