September 21st-September 27th
September 21st, 2023: We open the four games set at Citizens Bank Park with Jake Florence (12-10, 3.88 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) battling the young Cole Bellinger (1-3, 7.52 ERA, 1.67 WHIP). Florence has been hot as of late, as well as Thomas Dillard and Shoehi Ohtani. Our losing streak continued as Dan Vogelback hit a walk off sac fly in the 10th, as we lost 10-9, despite scoring 3 in the 8th and 9th.
Florence had a rough outing, 5 runs on 7 hits, and a walk in 3.1 innings with just 2 strikeouts. Nick Neideret allowed a run, hit, walk, and struck out 3 in 1.1 innings. Brett Conine couldn't get an out and allowed 3 runs off 3 hits. Ben Popkin got the loss, 1.2 innings with 2 hits, a walk, and a run.
Nolan Gorman was 3-for-5 with a homer, run scored, and 2 RBIs. Seth Beer was 2-for-6 with a solo shot. Carlos Soler got a pinch hit 2 run homer in the 8th. Reizo Honda was 1-for-3 with his first big league hit. Adam Haseley was 3-for-4 with a walk, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI's, and a double. Jose Ramirez hit a pinch hit 2 run double in the 9th. Thomas Dillard was 1-for-4 with 2 walks, 2 runs, a steal, and double. Nick Gordon was 2-for-6.
September 22nd, 2023: The NL Central leading Cubs will be without CL Michael Feliz for the postseason and most of next year with a torn flexor tendon. "Fuego" Feliz was having a great first year in Chicago, 37 saves and a 1.37 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 65.2 innings.
The Braves locked up LHP A.J. Minter for 2 more seasons, paying 9 million a year. From 2017-2023, Minter has a career 2.95 ERA and 1.24 WHIP with 241 strikeouts, 44 saves, and 4 shocking starts in 155.2 innings.
Game two saw Jordan Montgomery (8-2, 3.28 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) taking on Marcos Molina (6-14, 4.92 ERA, 1.43 WHIP) as we look to bounce back. The skid continued with a 6-4 loss.
Montgomery had a rough start, 4 runs in 3.2 innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts. Dustin May allowed a run in 1.1 innings with 3 hits and a strikeout. Brett Conine allowed a run in an inning off a hit and strikeout. His ERA is a beautiful 19.64...
Seth Beer was 2-for-4 with a solo shot. Nick Feight was 1-for-3 with a run shot. Brendan Rodgers was 3-for-4 with a double and run scored.
September 23rd, 2023: I added two more arms to the roster with the activation of both Jameson Taillon and Tim Cate.
The Rays clinched the East with. Manager Joe Girardi has lead the team to a 90-64 record.
Jameson Taillon (7-5, 4.43 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) earned the start against Sixto Sanchez (6-11, 4.74 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) as we desperately looked for a win. Instead, the stupid last place Phillies blew us out 11-3 and we're a game away from the sweep. We also still have just 91 wins...
Taillon pitched alright, 5.1 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and a strikeout. Ben Popkin got hit hard, 5 runs and 3 hits with 2 walks with just 1 out. Koda Glover also struggled, an inning of work with 5 hits, 4 runs, and a walk.
Carlos Soler was 1-for-4 with a solo shot. Seth Beer was 2-for-3 with a solo shot of his own. Reizo Honda was 1-for-4 with a double.
Our lead has slipped to just 4.5 and we've dropped 5 in a row. I hate how streaky we can be...
September 24th, 2023: We looked to avoid the sweep with A.J. Puckett (9-7, 3.93 ERA, 1.54 WHIP) facing JoJo Romero (9-14, 4.70 ERA, 1.28 WHIP). Bryce Harper loves facing Puckett, hitting over .360 career against him. We finally won, in a nice 5-1 series finale.
Puckett went 6 with 4 hits, a run, a walk, and 3 strikeouts. His ERA is now down to 3.82 after a dreadful start to the year that lead to his demotion. Ben Popking got a hold while pitching a perfect 7th.
Mickey Moniak was 2-for-5 with a steal, double, and RBI. Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-3 with a walk, run scored, and pair of doubles. Scott Kingery was 2-for-3 with a double, walk, run scored, and RBI. Cole Roederer was 1-for-3 with a walk, run scored, and three RBI's. His statline looks like he should have a homer run, but trust me, he didn't hit one.
We're back home for three before a much needed day off. We'd host the Mets, who are 4.5 games behing us. We'd see Chris Sale (4-1, 4.02 ERA), Brady Singer (13-10, 2.90 ERA), and the struggling Jacob deGrom (2-4, 5.08 ERA).
September 25th, 2023: There will be postseason baseball for the Marlins, as we clinched a playoff spot after yesterday's win. At 92-64, we are in shape to win our division.
Shockingly, we remain 2nd in the Power Rankings even with the 5 game losing streak we just snapped.
The Cubs clinched their division today. At 87-69, they hold a 7 game lead over the Reds. They'll get to defend their title this season after going all the way last year.
Brady Singer (13-10, 2.90 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) skipped Sale in another ace-off against Walker Buehler (11-7, 3.45 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) who's been great recently. All the runs were scored in the first 3 innings, and we won 4-2.
Buehler went just 5, allowing 6 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and 4 strikeouts. Tyler Jay, Phil Maton, and Joe Jimenez got holds while Yasukazu Shiotani got the save. Tehy all combined for just a single hit and walk with 6 strikeouts in 4 innings.
Mickey Moniak was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run scored, RBI, and was caught stealing. Cole Roederer, who hit fourth for some reason, was 1-for-4 with a steal. Boone has hit so many differenet guys fourth, but they generally get hits. Nick Feight was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI's. Nolan Gorman was 1-for-3 with a double and he scored as well.
September 26th, 2023: The A's clinched the AL West today. At 90-66, they have a 7.5 game lead over the Rangers. This is their first postseason appearence since 2014.
The Reds were eliminated from the postseason today. At 80-76, they can no longer win the Wild Card.
Jake Florence (12-10, 4.07 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) and Chris Sale (4-1, 4.02 ERA, 1.09 WHIP) dueled in a battle of former White Sox first rounders. Sale was taken 13th Overall way back in 2010. Our bats gave the home fans a show as we won 8-2.
Florence was solid, 6 innings with 5 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Koda Glover and Tyler Jay earned holds in the 7th before we broke away. Ernesto Estrella finished the last two innings with 3 strikeouts.
Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubels and 4 RBI's. Thomas Dillard was 1-for-2 with 3 walks, 3 runs scored, and his 20th steal of the year. I have no idea who the last catcher to steal at least 20 bases was. Seth Beer was 2-for-3 with a run scored, walk, and RBI. Adam Haseley was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.
September 27th, 2023: It's official, and in year #30, the Marlins have won their first NL East Title. Our 6.5 game lead over Atlanta and New York is too much to overcome, and we finally, finally, finally can't be eliminated after just 1 game.
But first, we looked to finish the sweep with Jordan Montgomery (8-3, 3.46 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) taking on Jacob deGrom (2-4, 5.08 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) who is now 35. The Mets edged us 5-4, as they need the win far more then we do.
Montgomery had a rough outing, 3 runs off 5 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Max Povse allowed a run in 1.2 innings off a hit and a strikeout. Koda Glover was charged with the loss, allowing a run in 0.2 innings with 2 hits and a strikeout.
Reizo Honda was 2-for-2 with an RBI, but left with an injruy. Shoehi Ohtani hit his 22nd homer in a 1-for-3 outing with a walk. Adam Haseley was 2-for-4 with a triple and run scored. Mickey Moniak was 1-for-3 with a walk, triple, and run scored. Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a run scored, RBI, and a double.
We have tomorrow off, before we have our final series of the year, a three game set hosting the Chicago White Sox. It's almost playoff time in Miami, which will finally get to host a playoff game in my tenure. We've still sold out every game this year, so I'm guessing the NLDS tickets have already sold out.
