July 21st-July 27th

July 21st, 2023: We kick off the second half of the season agaisnt the Milwuakee Brewers and former Marlins farmhand Thomas Hatch (9-6, 4.14 ERA, 1.54 WHIP). Jordan Montgomery (6-1, 3.25 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) got the ball for us. Of course, we're on the road, so this game will be a million times more challenging then it should be. We tried really hard to lose, but rallied for 2 in the top of the 9th to win the opener 4-3.

Montgomery went 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, 3 runs (2 earend) and struck out 2. Ben Popkin got his first career win, 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Yasukazu Shiotani got a hold, because he left with an injury after a hit and a fly out. Joe Jimenez got the final two batters out to earn the save.

Montgomery was doing it with the bat too, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and 2 runs scored. Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a pir of RBI's. Thomas Dillard was 1-for-4 with a walk and RBI, but committed two errors.

Carlos Correa was 5-for-5 as the Padres beat the Phillies 11-8.

July 22nd, 2023: Walker Buehler (8-5, 3.89 ERA, 1.12 WHIP) took the mound against Jimmy Nelson (3-8, 5.87 ERA, 1.51 WHIP) for game two. We're back to our old ways, and allowed 4 in the 7th to lose 5-4.

It's not on Buehler, who allowed just 3 hits and an unearned run in 6 innings. He struck out 9 and walked 2. Koda Glover technically got a hold, but allowed 2 hits and 2 runs with a strikeout in 0.2 innings. Luiz Gohara got the loss, allowing a hit, walk, and 2 runs before getting an out. Popkin finished the game with 3 strikeouts in 1.1 innings. He's tossed 9.1 scorless innings in the majors so far.

Lewis Brinson was 2-for-4 with a three run homer off Nelson in the 2nd. Mickey Moniak was 2-for-4. Seth Beer was 2-for-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored, and a double. Cole Roederer was 1-for-2 with a run scored, 2 walks, and 1-for-2 stealing bases.

Mike Soroka tossed a 5-0 shutout as the Braves beat the Royals.

July 23rd, 2023: Jose Ramirez is healthy again, and will begin rehab in the DSL so he can stay close to his family.

Shiotani's diagnosis came back, and he jsut has a stiff back, and will not retire a DL stint. I'm guessing Matingly will limit his innings, but I don't know what to think with him sometimes.

Seattle sent Reggie Lawson to the Braves for Cade Smith in what I think may be the most useless trade of all time. They traded 0.5* righties. But Jerry does love to make his trades...

Jake Florence (7-7, 4.69 ERA, 1.45 WHIP) made his highly anticipated Marlins debut against Felix Jorge (4-7, 5.72 ERA, 1.46 WHIP) as we looked to win this series. Our road struggles continued as we dropped the finale 2-1.

Florence was great, 6 innings with 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 6 strikeouts which is better then any start Jace Vines had all year. Joe Jimenez left after just one hitter, and his diagnosis is pending.

Former Brewer's Lewis Brinson and Thomas Dillard both doubled. Dillard was 2-for-4, Brinson 1-for-4 with the lone run scored. Nolan Gorman was 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Nick Gordon was 2-for-4, but was caught stealing.

And just like that, the Mets have teid us for first place...

It doesn't get easier, as we're off to San Francisco for four. For some reason, we're awful against sub .500 teams when on the road, and hopefully the 43-55 Giants will be different. We'd see Zach Linginfelter (4-7, 5.54 ERA), Martin Carrasco (2-5, 6.50 ERA), Madison Bumgarner (6-6, 3.77 ERA), and Carter Raffield (5-3, 2.78 ERA).

July 24th, 2023: Jimenez will be fine, just back spasams that may cost him a game.

We're down to 10th in the Power Rankings...

Seattle traded SP Juan de Paula to the Royals for LF Cooper Davis. I like this deal for the Mariners.

We opened the series in San Fran with A.J. Puckett (5-3, 4.11 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) facing Zach Linginfelter (4-7, 5.54 ERA, 1.56 WHIP). If we don't win this series... The Giants do have a good offense, but lack the starting pitching to be competitive. Or maybe not today, as they edged us 3-2.

Puckett allowed just 1 run in 5.2 innings with 9 hits, a walk, and 4 strikeouts. We lost, because for some reason, Mattingly pitches the injured Jimenez, who allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, and 2 walks, with 2 strikeouts, in an inning...

Shoehi Ohtani was 1-for-4 with a solo homer. Nolan Gorman was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Cole Roederer was 2-for-3 with a walk. Him and Gorman were both caught stealing.

And for the first time all year, we're not in first place. The Mets didn't play, so we're half a game out with one less win.

Raimel Tapia of the Rockies extended his hit streak to 20 in a 3-2 win over the Reds.

July 25th, 2023: The career of 36-year-old Yu Darivsh ended today after he tore his UCL and decided enough was enough. He'll finish his career 95-67 with a 3.41 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. He struck out 1,561 hitters in 1,371.1 innings.

We desperately needed to stop losing with Jake Junis (4-5, 5.52 ERA, 1.42 WHIP) taking on 0.5* Martin Carrasco (2-5, 6.50 ERA, 1.60 WHIP). We allowed 3 in the 8th and dropped the second game 4-1.

Junis allowed 4 in 7.1 innings with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Phil Maton got a strikeout and fly out to end the 8th.

Shoehi Ohtani was 2-for-4 with an RBi double. Mickey Moniak was 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.

If we don't split this series, I'm firing Don Mattingly...

July 26th, 2023: The Orioles will be without SP Keegan Akin for the rest of the year wtih a partially torn UCL. He will end the season 4-5 with a 4.85 ERA.

The Orioles reacted by trading CF Bradley Zimmer to the Angels for RHP Alberto Tirado. It seems like a fair enough trade.

Jordan Montgomery (6-1, 3.23 ERA, 1.23 WHIP) faced Madison Bumgarner (6-6, 3.77 ERA, 1.19 WHIP) as we looked to win a game. We lost 8-3, and I showed Mattingly the door...

Montgomery allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 3.2 innings with a walk and 3 strikeouts. Edward Cabrera allowed 3 more off 4 hits in 1.1 innings with 2 strikeouts. Luiz Gohara struck out 7 in 3 innings, but allowed 2 hits and a run.

Lewis Brinson was 2-for-5. Shoehi Ohtani was 3-for-4 with a solo homer and a steal. Nolan Gorman was 1-for-4 with a double.

Ramiel Tapia's streak was snapped at 21 in a 5-3 win over the Reds.

Tim Wallach would be interim manager for the time being, but I found a recently fired Manager I liked to take the helm.

July 27th, 2023: We looked to avoid the 4 game sweep with Walker Buehler (8-5, 3.69 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) taking on Carter Raffield (5-3, 2.78 ERA, 1.05 WHIP). More of the same, as we lost 7-6 on a walk off RBI single from Manny Machado. How embarassing...

Buehler allowed just 2 in 5 innings with 4 hits, a walk, and 5 strikeouts, but was for some reason taken out for Phil Maton. He allowed 4 runs in the 6th... Shiotani got the loss, allowing a walk, hit, and the run, in 0.1 innings.

We didn't even hit that well, just 7 singles. Ohtani was 2-for-5 with a run scored and 2 driven in. Nick Gordon and THomas Dillard were both 1-for-4 with a run, RBI, and walk. Nolan Gorman was 1-for-3 with a run and walk. No fault to him, he was optioend to AAA with Ramirez concluding his rehab assigment.

Devon Peterson tossed a 3-hit shutout as the Rangers beat the Indians 6-0.

Luckily, we'd return home for three with the Pirates, but we're now just 56-45 and 2.5 games behind the Mets. Our current road record is 20-33 and we're 9-13 in July. If we played all our games on the road, we'd be worse then everyone excpet the pitiful 30-73 Yankees. Every game at home, we'd win 122 games.

Anyways, the Pirates would send Shane Baz (6-7, 3.06 ERA), Nathan Eovaldi (5-10, 5.92 ERA), and Mitch Keller (3-9, 4.10 ERA) to the mound. The deadline is also just 4 games away...
