July 10th-July 16th
July 10th, 2023: Tyler Jay is headed to the DL for four weeks with a fractured shoulder blade. I called up lefty Corbin Clouse from AAA.
Speaking of AAA, Adam Haseley was named player of the week, hitting .438 with a homer and 6 RBI's. He also scored 8 times to raise his average to .365 with New Orleans.
And as expected, we took a plummet in the power rankings, all the way down to 11.
We needed to bounce back, with Walker Buehler (8-5, 3.82 ERA, 1.06 WHIP) taking on Joey Wentz (5-7, 3.94 ERA, 1.35 WHIP). We needed a win exteremely bad. Home sweet home and we walked off winners 3-2 in the 9th. Former Marlin Kyle Barraclough walked Thomas Dillard with the bases packed.
Buehler pitched well enough, 5.1 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Yasukazu Shoitani got the win, pitching the 9th with a walk and strikeout.
Ryan Mountcastle was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-3 with a walk. Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a walk and double. Today's hero Dillard was 1-for-3 with a run scored, RBI, and 2 walks, including the game winner.
July 11th, 2023: Jordan Montgomery(6-1, 3.11 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) wanted revenge against Mike Soroka (6-5, 2.90 ERA, 0.94 WHIP) and devided to take the mound. It might not bes the best idea, but hey, we won 7-4!
Montgomery had a limited work load, and went 4.1 innings with 5 hits, 3 runs, a walk, and an impressive 8 strikeouts. Shane Smith earned the win, tossing 1.2 perfect innings with three stirkeouts. Phil Maton, Luiz Gohara, and Joe Jimenez eanred holds and Yasukazu Shiotani got the save. There were no hit by pitches, but Montgomery may or may not have thrown one at Soroka's head. I'm hoping he did, but who knows...
Nolan Gorman got his first career hit with a solo homer off Soroka in the 2nd, and for good measures hit another off Cole Winn in the 6th, this time a 3-run shot. To finish the day, the youngster was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored, 4 RBI's, a walk, and a double in the four run 4th. Lewis Brinsonw as 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and RBI's, as well as a run scored. Mickey Moniak was 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Cole Roederer was 1-for-3 with a wlak and 2 runs scored.
July 12th, 2023: Home sweep home? A.J. Puckett (4-3, 4.53 ERA, 1.54 WHIP) got the ball against Sean Wymer (2-3, 2.32 ERA, 1.13 WHIP) as we looked to complete the sweep. The pitching was near perfect as we capped off the sweep 3-0. Why can't we play like this on the road...
Puckett has really turned it around after the demotion, 6 great innings with 2 hits, 2 walks, and 5 strikeouts. Corbin Clouse, Luiz Gohara, and Joe Jimenez got holds before Shiotani shut the door in a perfect 9th for the save.
Ryan Mountcastle got a start at short, and went 3-for-4 with a 2 run homer and a double. He was just a triple away from the cycle. Brendan Rodgers was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and was hit by a pitch. Seth Beer was 2-for-4.
Well, the Mets don't want to lose, and are still just 1.5 games out. We have an off day tomorrow before Philadelphia comes to town to finish the first half.
Madison Bumgarner tossed a 3-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over the Dodgers. The Giants lefty struck out 6 as well.
July 13th, 2023: We got a nice off day today to give the team a nice rest.
The Jays young 2B Bo Bichette extended his hitstreak to 20 games. The 25-year-old is hitting .343/.414/.613 with 22 steals, 20 homers, and 58 RBI's in an excellent campaign.
Matt Olson was 5-for-6 as the A's destroyed the Red Sox 13-0.
Former Rockie Vidal Brujan was 5-for-6 as the Rockies out hit the Brewers in a 16-12 slugfest.
Lastly, SS Bryson Stott went 5-for-6 in a 16-12 Arizona win over LA. Two 5-for-6 games in 16-12 wins? How crazy is that!
The Mets won to cut our lead to just 1. We'd battle Marcos Molina (4-9, 5.18 ERA), JoJo Romero (6-8, 5.11 ERA), and Sixto Sanchez (5-5, 3.57 ERA) of the last place 40-52 Phillies. We really needed this sweep to enter the break hot!
July 14th, 2023: Jose Ramirex hasn't healed as planned, and there is no timetable for his return...
Jace Vines (3-7, 5.87 ERA, 1.76 WHIP) needed to show me isn't useless against Marcos Molina (4-9, 5.18 ERA, 1.45 WHIP). Oh what a beauty it is when you get a lot of runs, and we won the opener 10-3.
Vines wasn't too bad, 6 innings with 7 hits, 3 runs, a walk, and 5 strikeouts. I don't mid starts like this. Edward Cabrera struck out 5 in 2.1 innings and allowed 3 hits. Shane Smith got the final two outs in the 9th with a strikeout and hit.
We exploded for 15 hits today, and even Vines got in on the action, 1-for-1 with 2 RBI's and a sac bunt. Mickey Moniak went deep against his former team in a 2-for-5 game with 2 runs scored and a double. Ryan Mountcastle was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored, a walk, 3 RBI's, and a homer. Thomas Dillard was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Cole Roederer was 3-for-4 with a double, run scored, RBI, and his 20th steal of the season. He's no Brannen, but 20 is still a solid amount, especially for the Rule-5 draftee. Nolan Gorman was 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Shoehi Ohtani was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a steal.
Bichette's hit streak was ended at 20 by the Red Sox in a 4-2 loss. The Mets have now won 9 in a row...
I sent Koda Glover to the A Greensboro. I'd hold him there until after the All-Star break.
I signed SS Rogelio 'Tugboat' Maldonado to a nice big $4,480,000 bonus. The 17-year-old is rated a 4* with 89 power potential and can play 2B, 3B, SS, and RF.
The Rays swapped SS Adrian Rondon to the Mariners for RHP Jake Irvin. It's a head scratcher for the Mariners...
Now it's Jake Junis' (3-5, 5.70 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) turn to prove he's not useless against JoJo Romero (6-8, 5.11 ERA, 1.32 WHIP). We scored 3 early runs in the 2nd, and another in the 7th after they scored three, and won 4-3.
Junis pitched fine, 7 innings with an alarming 9 hits, 3 runs, just 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Luiz Gohara and Joe Jimenez got holds and Yasukazu Shiotani earned the save, his 19th of the year.
Mickey Moniak had another good game against his former employer, 2-for-4 today. Cole Roederer was 1-for-3 with a 2-run double, and he later scored himself. Nolan Gorman was 1-for-3 and drove Roederer in. Brendan Rodgers was 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
The Mets finally lost, so we have a bit of breathing room, and will no matter what stay in first place the whole first half of the year. Although it doesn't matter if we don't end in first.
Also, I think I want Joe LaBrie back. After today's start, he's 5-4 with a 2.79 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. I love Nick Gordon, but LaBrie would be so helpful right now.
July 16th, 2023: The All-Star rosters were announced today! Representing your Miami Marlins: SP Jordan Montgomery, RP Edward Cabrera, CL Yasukazu Shiotani, and C Thomas Dillard. It's Shiotani's 2nd nod, and the other three's first. Dillard will be the first of my Marlins to start the All-Star game, as he won the fan vote for catchers.
The Red Sox will be without reliever turned starter Matt Bowman for the year with bone chips in his elbow. He was 5-4 with a 3.94 ERA in 18 starts and 82.1 innings.
The last game of the first half will take place between Walker Bueh;er (8-5, 3.80 ERA, 1.08 WHIP) and Sixto Sanchez (5-5, 3.57 ERA, 1.15 WHIP). It's always great to enter the All-Star break with a win, but we fell 11-7. Buehler allowed 3 runs off 7 hits in 4.1 innings with 2 walks anda a strikeout. Shane Smith was tagged with the loss, allowing 5 runs off 3 hits in 1.1 innings with a walk. He'd be optioned to the minors to eventually make room for Koda Glover. Joe Jimenez allowed 2 more in 1.1 innings with 3 hits and 3 strikeouts. Phil Maton allowed the last run in the 8th, walking 3, striking out 1, and allowing a solo homer.
Seth Beer was 1-for-4 with his 18th homer of the year, 2 runs scored, a walk, and 2 RBI's. Cole Roederer was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and a 2-run homer. Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-5 with a double. Scott Kingery got a pinch hit RBI double in the 8th, and later scored.
Angels 2B Jorge Mateo hit for the cycle in an 8-6 win over his former team, the Yankees.
We ended the first half 55-39, good for a 1 game lead over the Mets. We needed to improve our pathetic 19-27 road record if we wanted to keep our lead.
