Top Performers of the Week

Boston Red Sox CF Reggie Smith was 3 for 4 with 2 HRs and 2 RBIs in a 7-2 win over the White Sox. The 24 year old is now hitting .346 with 9 HRs and 26 RBIs in 52 games. Smith is in his 4th season in the MLB, he set a career high with 148 hits including a AL leading 37 doubles in 1968 with the Red Sox. He hit .265 with 15 HRs and 69 RBIs in 155 games last year.

Minnesota Twins 3B Harmon Killebrew was 2 for 5 with 2 HRs and 6 RBIs in a 13-12 win over the Senators. The 32 year old is now hitting .274 with 19 HRs and 49 RBIs in 51 games. Killebrew had a career high 160 hits during the 1966 season with the Twins. He also led the AL with 103 walks that year. For the 1966 season, Killebrew hit .281 with 39 HRs and 110 RBIs in 162 games.

Los Angeles Dodgers SP Bill Singer allowed 3 hits and struck out 9 in a complete game 3-0 win over the Expos. The 25 year old is now 8-3 with a 1.65 ERA in 14 starts. Singer set a career high with 13 wins last year with the Dodgers. For the season he was 13-17 with a 2.88 ERA in 36 starts.

Minnesota Twins SP Jim Kaat was named the AL Player of the Week. The 30 year old is now 8-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 12 starts. Kaat set a career high for wins with 25 in 1966 for the Twins. That season he was 25-13 with a 2.75 ERA in 41 starts. His 25 wins, 41 starts and 304.2 innings pitched all led the AL in 1966.

St Louis Cardinals CF Curt Flood was named the NL Player of the Week. The 31 year old is now hitting .310 with 3 HRs and 26 RBIs in 54 games. Flood set a career high with 211 hits in 1964, that led the NL that season. For the season, Flood hit .311 with 5 HRs and 46 RBIs in 162 games. Flood also led the NL with 739 plate appearances and 679 at bats in 1964.

This Weeks Major Transactions.

In April of 1969 the California Angels signed free agent Dick Stuart for the season, but it appears that this week the end of a career for Stuart as he was released by the Angels. After taking off 2 years to try his craft in Japan with the [league redacted] and the Taiyo Whales, the Angels thought they would check to see if there was anything left in the tank. Stuart was hitting .190 with 0 HRs and 3 RBIs in 13 games this season. Stuart had a career high 168 hits in the 1964 season for the Red Sox. He hit .279 with 33 HRs and 114 RBIs that season in 156 games. He was nicknamed "Dr Stranglove" for his defensive struggles at 1B or as Hank Aaron called him "Stone Fingers".

After drafting SP Mudcat Grant from the Dodgers in the 1968 expansion draft, the Montreal Expos have traded Grant to the St Louis Cardinals for RP Gary Waslewski. The 33 year old Grant is 1-7 with a 9.41 ERA in 10 starts for the Expos. Grant had a career high 21 wins during the 1965 season when he was 21-7 with a 3.30 ERA in 39 starts for the Twins. His 21 wins led the AL in 1965. The 27 year old Waslewski is 2-0 with a 5.00 ERA in 7 games for the Cardinals. Waslewski had a career high 4 wins with the Red Sox in 1968 when he went 4-7 with 2 saves, a 3.67 ERA in 34 games including 11 starts. Mudcat Grant was the first black pitcher to win 20 games when he won 21 for the Twins.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released RP Pedro Ramos. The 34 year old was 0-0 with a 27.00 ERA in 1 inning so far this season. Ramos had a career high 14 wins during the 1958 season when he was 14-18 with 3 saves, a 4.23 ERA in 43 games including 37 starts. His 18 losses led the AL that season. Ramos was credited with the 1st Twins win in 1961.

The Seattle Pilots have traded Gary Bell to the Chicago White Sox for Bob Locker. The 32 year old Bell was 3-4 with a 5.18 ERA in 11 starts this season. Bell had a career high 16 wins in 1959 when he was 16-11 with 5 saves, a 4.04 ERA in 44 games including 28 starts for the Indians. The 31 year old Locker is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in 11 games (13 IPs) for the White Sox.
