1970's
As we start the 70's the game is starting to change. New stars emerge, some great pitchers and some new sluggers will make their mark during the 70's. Also we will say goodbye to some of the all time greats of the game. Ok back to the game itself.
Boston wins the AL East and Oakland win the West as the A's get their first division title in just their 3rd season in Oakland. In the NL The Phillies win 20 of their final 28 games to get past the Cubs and Mets to win the East. The West was even more interesting as the Braves and Dodgers tie and the Braves win the one game playoff to capture the division title.
The Red Sox win the AL title in a series dominated by pitching as there were 4 shutouts in the 5 game series. In the NL the Phillies stayed hot and swept the Braves.
The Red Sox take their 4 World Series title in 5 seasons as the beat the Phillies in 6 games. The Phillies won games one and two by scores of 10-1 and 1-0, but Boston wins 4 straight as Tony Conigliaro is the Series MVP.
AL MVP and Cy Young Awards
Oakland's left-handed 21 year old Vida Blue has an outstanding season as he goes 25-4 with a 1.65 ERA and 286 strikeouts.
AL ROY Washington Senators SS Bill Madlock .279/14/80
NL MVP and Cy Young Awards
Mets pitcher Tom Seaver becomes the first player to win the MVP and CY Young Award twice in the same season. Tom Terrific almost duplicates his last season going 19-6 ERA 2.07.
NL ROY Astros CF Cesar Cedeno .314/25/113 with 54 SB's
Cleveland's Sam McDowell equals Sandy Koufax record of 18 strikeouts in a game. He also throws 1970's only no-hitter against the White Sox, the 2nd of his career.
On May 16th Willie Mays becomes the 3rd member of the 600 Home Run club joining Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle. Mays ends the season with 622 career dingers.
Hoyt Wilhelm moves into 2nd place All Time behind Cy Young in games pitched with 804 and retires after 20 big league seasons at the age of 47.
Mickey Mantle ends the 1970 season tied with Ty Cobb in games played at 3,035.
