May 29th-June 4th
May 29th, 2023: To start the week, we remain 5th in the Power Rankings.
Chance Adams (3-2, 2.93 ERA, 0.74 WHIP) jumped Jeff Hoffman in the rotation and will take on Walker Buehler (6-1, 3.22 ERA, 0.95 WHIP). I gave Lewis Brinson a day off from the field and played him at DH due to the AL park. We upset the home crowd and took the opener 3-1.
Buehler went 5.2 innings, allowing just a single run with a walk, 4 hits, and 7 strikeouts. Phil Maton and Koda Glover earned saves while Yasukazu Shiotani recorded his 10th save.
Jose Ramirez was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cole Roederer was 1-for-5 with a solo homer. Ryan Mountcastle was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Former Marlin and now Indian Dustin Fowler was 5-for-8 in a 9-7 win over Milwaukee. He's hitting .279 in 61 at bats this year.
Mariners RF Janisel Rivera launched three homers, but his team still lost to the powerful Padres 13-11.
May 30th, 2023: The Reds will be without pitcher Vladimir Guitierrez for the rest of the season with a torn labrum. It's bee a rough go for him, and this makes the knightmarish season even worse.
Jace Vines (2-1, 5.08 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) got the start against our former starter Jeff Hoffman (2-2, 4.64 ERA, 1.21 WHIP) as we looked to win both road outings. I gave Brinson the day off in favor of Carlos Soler. A big 6 rund 2nd lead to the 10-4 crushing from the hometwon Orioles to earn the split.
Vines had another rough outing, allowing 7 off 7 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Edward Cabrera allowed a run in 3 innings of mop up with 1 walk and 3 strikeouts to go with 2 hits. Dustin May allowed 2 more off 3 hits in 2.2 innings with 2 strikeouts.
Brendan Rodgers was 2-for-4 with a solo homer and a double. Adam Hasely was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a double. Cole Roederer was 0-for-3, but scored, walked, and an RBI, steal, and sacrafice fly.
Rafael Devers was 5-for-5 in a 7-3 Red Sox win over the Phillies.
As we headed home, I optoined Carlos Soler to AAA and recalled OF Mickey Moniak from his rehab assignment. Back home we'll see Keegan Akin (2-4, 3.99 ERA) and Codey Sedlock (2-3, 5.66 ERA).
May 31st, 2023: Hopefully, this will be Nick Neidert's (0-1, 12.27 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) last start of the year as we hosted Baltimore and Keegan Akin (2-4, 3.99 ERA, 1.25 WHIP). Moniak hit leadoff and will man center in his Marlins debut. Despite his fragile rating, I'd plan on keepin him until at least free agency, with a strong 4th OF (like Brinson) on the roster. It took 13 innings, but Nick Feight hit a walk off solo homer as we won 2-1.
Maybe I exaggerated on Neidert, as he was almost perfect in 8 innings. He allowed just a single run and 2 hits with 4 strikeouts. Still, I rather him pitch out of the pen, but luckily I didn't rush and acquire just any starter. Tyler Jay eanred the win, 2 scorless innings in the 12th and 13th.
We only had 6 hits in the game. Scott Kinger was 2-for-4 with a walk and a pair of steals. Lewis Brinson was 1-for-3 with a solo shot before being replace by Thomas Dillard in right field. Moniak was 1-for-4 with a walk in his debut with a steal in two attempts.
Shiotani is headed to the DL with shoulder inflammation, but shouldn't miss more then the minimum. Koda Glover will be the temomparary closer for now.
Manny Machado hit his 300th homer as the Giants beat the Astros 10-2. It took him just 1,606 games to do it, and is a career .282/.338/.480 hitter.
June 1st, 2023: Seth Beer was named Rookie of the Month again, hitting .265 with 3 homers and 13 RBI's. He's hitting .289/.390/.548 for the year with 8 homers and 33 RBI's.
AA SP Jake Baker was named Southern Leauge Pitcher of the Month. He was 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 5 starts with 35 strikeouts in 33 innings.
The Angels traded RHP Justin Marsden to Arizona for LF Eduardo Diaz. It's a pretty even deal.
I purchased the contract of RHP Jensen Elliot from AAA. The 26-year-old tossed 36.1 innings with New Orleans, going 3-0 with a save and a 2.72 ERA. He has a passable 1.32 WHIP with 33 strikeouts and 15 walks. Origionally acquired from the Cubs, the former 7th Rounder will make his big league debut.
We looked to finish the "sweep" with Jordan Montgomery (4-1, 2.76 ERA, 1.29 WHIP) taking on Cody Sedlock (2-3, 5.66 ERA, 1.74 WHIP). I gave Brinson the day off in favor of Ryan Mountcastle. He'd play 1B and push Beer up to right. Mountcastle wouldn't make a terrible outfielder, but I rather play him at first, where he's turned into a great defender. We finished the finale with a 6-3 win.
Monty was solid, 6 innings with 6 hits, 3 runs, a walk, and 7 strikeouts. Phil Maton and Tyler Jay earned holds while Koda Glover picked up the save.
Jose Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a solo homer and a sac fly. Cole Roederer was 1-for-4 with a solo shot, a steal, and 2 total runs scored. Seth Beer was 1-for-3 with a walk, double, and run scored.
We'd stay home and host the 2nd Place Nationals. At 29-24, we have a 4.5 game lead over them. The projected starters are Bryan Mitchell (2-3, 4.81 ERA), Brreiling Eusebio (2-1, 3.18 ERA), and Sonny Warner (3-3, 3.66 ERA).
June 2nd, 2023: Jameson Taillon (6-3, 3.86 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) opened the series against Bryan Mitchell (2-3, 4.81 ERA, 1.49 WHIP) as we hosted our division rival. Anderson Franco loves facing Taillon, and is 8-for-19 with 2 homers. Christian Yelich, however, dreads him, and is 2-for-23. It was a close one, but we walked away 7-6 winners.
Taillon left the game with bicep tendinitis, and will miss 2-3 months for recovery. Just what I needed, another injury... He went 4 innings with 3 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, and 4 strikeouts. Max Povse replaced him, going 1.1 innings with a hit, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Luiz Gohara finished the 6th and got the win, allowing a run on two hits with 2 walks and a strikeout. Phil Maton and Jensen Elliot got holds and for some reaosn Dustin may got the save. This was Elliot's debut, and he pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout.
We hit a lot of hoemrs. Nick Gordon had two of them, going 2-for-3 with a walk, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI's. Seth Beer was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, an RBI, a double, and a homer. Thomas Dillard was 2-for-4 with a solo shot. Jose Ramirez was 1-for-3 with a walk, triple, run, and RBI.
June 3rd, 2023: I reluctantly brought back A.J. Puckett since I really needed a starting pitcher. He did better in 3 AAA starts, 1-3 with a 3.49 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 27 strikeouts in 28.1 innings.
Walker Buehler (7-1, 3.08 ERA, 0.95 WHIP) was on the mound for game two against Breiling Eusebio (2-1, 3.18 ERA, 1.29 WHIP), and both guys have done well against the opposition in their earlier starts. The Nats got the best of us, and took the middle game 4-3.
Buehler allowed 3 in 5.1 innings off 4 hits, a walk, and 9 strikeouts. Luiz Gohara finished the 6th and allowed a run off 2 hits, a walk, and a strikeout. Jensen Elliot tossed 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, a walk, and recording 2 strikeouts.
Mickey Moniak went deep and was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored, a walk, and 2 RBI's. Cole Roederer was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
June 4th, 2023: The Reds will be without Freicer Perez for the rest of the year with a torn labrum. The righty was 3-2 with a 4.43 ERA and a save to start the season in 16 games (5 starts).
We looked to win the series, but had an unfavorable pitching matchup in Jace Vines (2-2, 5.21 ERA, 1.71 WHIP) versus Sonny Warner (3-3, 3.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP). Vines is a much better pitcher then the numbers suggest. The Nats got 3 in the 6th and won the series with a 4-2 victory. We really struggle against them...
Vines allowed 3 in 5 with 6 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Max Povse tossed 3 innings, allowing 2 hits, a run, and a strikeout.
Nick Gordon was 2-for-5 with a double. Lewis Brinson, Mickey Moniak, and Brendon Rodgers all picked up steals. Adam Haseley was 1-for-3 with a RBI and a walk.
That didn't go as planne,d but we're off to New York to face the Mets for three before an off day. At 35-22, we have a 3.5 game lead over the Nats, and New York is a half game back at 31-26. Both teams hold Wild Card spots, and the Braves trail New York by half a game. We'd see Chris Sale (3-0, 4.03 ERA), Noah Syndergaard (2-6, 4.93 ERA), and Brady Singer (8-3, 2.39 ERA).
But first, a special Amateur Draft edition for the 2023 First Year Player Draft.
