May 15th-May 21st
May 15th, 2023: Joe Jimenez is headed to the DL with shoulder indlammation and will miss 3-4 weeks. I'd bring someone else up tomorrow.
Former 11th overall pick Ryan Rolison is out for the year with a torn ulnar collateral ligament. The Seattle righty has made 22 big league starts while working an unispiring 5.04 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, although 2023 has been better then 2022.
We're down even farther to 7th in the Power Rankings, while the new #1 is San Diego.
Dansby Swanson was 5-for-5 in a 8-5 loss to the Rockies. Now a third basemen (knew he'd never stick at short...) Swanson is playing in his 8th big league season with a .270/.332/.405 batting line.
We'd head home to face the Cardinals with a 2.5 game lead over Washington. St. Louis is in 3rd and 9.5 out of their division. We'll face Slade Cecconi (3-3, 6.03 ERA), Darien Nunez (0-2, 5.30 ERA), and Tyler Beede (4-1, 4.95 ERA). We need to start winning again!
May 16th, 2023: Jose Ramirez asked for an extension, but I'm not ready to pay him over $21 million a year for 6 seasons. I could revisit this later, but I prefer Montgomery to him.
The Jays will be without former 12th overall pick Carter Stewart for the year with a torn labrum. The 23-year-old was having a strong season, 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 8 starts. He's a bright young arm, a 3/5 rated righty from Melbourne, FL.
I called up RHP NicK Neidert to replace Jimenez, and he'd pitch middle relief. As a starter in New Orleans, he's 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with 41 strikeouts in 44.2 innings.
On to the opener, Jordan Montgomery (2-1, 2.51 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) hosted the Cardinals in a packed Marlins Park. We saw Clade Cecconi (3-3, 6.03 ERA, 1.22 WHIP) who we hit pretty well earlier in the season. We continued the skid with a 9-6 loss, where we were out hit 17-8.
Only 4 of the runs were on Monty, who allowed 8 hits and a walk with 4 K's in 4 innings. Edward Cabrera was charged with the loss, a run in 2 innings off 2 hits with 5 strikeouts. Brett Conine, Luiz Gohara, Max Povse, and Yasukazu Shiotani all allowed single runs. Shiotani did strike out hte side in the 9th, despite the solo homer.
Seth Beer was 2-for-3 with a 2 run homer and a walk. Thomas Dillard and Lewis Brinson were 1-for-4 with 2 run homers. I don't know what's happening...
Mason Robbins jacked three longballs in an 11-10 slugfest Sox win over the Astros. The unlikely superstar is hitting .361/.381/.669 with 12 homers and 35 RBI's. He launched 50 longballs and drove in 130 runs back in 2021 to lead the AL.
But more impressive was Noah Bremer's no hitter as the Cubs beat the Nats 3-0. In just his 3rd big league start, he was as good as it gets. His career ERA is a lofty 7.24 with a 1.46 WHIP.
May 17th, 2023: I claimed Dustin May off waivers and optioned Brett Conine down to AAA. A former 3rd Rounder, he's 2-1 with a 4.74 ERA and 1.49 WHIP in 43.2 innings with the Dodgers. He's been used strictly as a reliever in the majors, like I will, but he can start games as well.
We needed a win, with Jameson Taillon (5-3, 4.43 ERA, 1.35 WHIP) taking on Darien Nunez (0-2, 5.30 ERA, 1.50 WHIP). Another stupid loss, this time 2-1, as we haven't been able to buy a win lately...
No fault to Taillon, 7 strong innings with 3 hits, a walk, 6 strikeouts, and no one. Felipe Rivero allowed 2 more runs in the 8th off 3 hits, and I've had it with him.
We only had 2 hits, so it's not like we lit the world on fire. Nick Gordon was -for-3 with 2 walks and the only run scored on a Seth Beer bases loaded walk. We did walk 9 times, so I guess that's okay.
29-year-old Joey Gallo slugged his 300th Homer in a 6-5 Rangers loss to Tampa. The big slugger reached the 300 mark with 3,508 at bats. He's lead the league in homers twice (2019 and 2020) and has drove in 685 runs.
May 18th, 2023: Rage trade? Perhaps, but I sent Felipe Rivero and Brady Puckett to the Cubs for Phil Maton and Garrett McDaniels.
McDaniels is an injured, 3/3.5 southpaw starter with an overpowering fastball and deadley curve. The 23-year-old is headed to the 60-Day DL, with 4-5 monts of recovery from radial nerve decompression surgery. The former 15th Rounder started his 2023 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 0.83 WHIP.
Maton is a 30-year-old righty from Chatham, Illinois. He's a 3* like Rivero, although he's got a 2.70 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 16.2 innings. He saved a league leading 43 games for the Padres back in 2020 with a 2.19 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, and 129 strikeouts in 78 innings.
Speaking of San Diego, they lost RHP Tad Ratliff for the year with a ruptrued UCL. The 27-year-old rookie tossed 6.2 innings in his first taste of the majors with a 1.35 ERA and 0.90 WHIP.
We couldn't get swept in a second straight series, especially at home, right!?!?!? Walker Buehler (4-1, 3.52 ERA, 1.00 WHIP) got the start against Tyler Beede (4-1, 4.95 ERA, 1.23 WHIP). Buehler needs a bounce back start, but had a rough outing earlier in the year against the Red Birds. Finally, we won, 7-4 with help from a 5 run 4th.
Buehler was solid, 5 innings with 6 hits, 2 runs, a walk, and 8 strikeouts. Nick Niedert allowed 2 runs in 1.2 innings off 2 hits and 2 strikeouts. Shiotani earned the save, striking out 2 in the 9th.
Jose Ramriez was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI's, a double, homer, and walk.Cole Roederer was 2-for-5 with a triple. Thomas Dillard was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double. Ryan Mountcastle was 1-for-3 with a walk, steal, and grand slam off the starter Beede in the 4th.
Wow, it felt nice to win!
Orlando Arcia was 5-for-6 in a 12-4 Brewers win over the Pirates.
We welcome the struggling Rockies into town for three more, as we maintain a 2.5 game lead over the Nats. As of now, the division doesn't look as scary as usual. We'd see Mashiaro Tanaka (2-4, 5.65 ERA), German Marquez (3-3, 4.57 ERA), and Jared Poche (1-0, 8.68 ERA).
May 19th, 2018: We opened the series with the Rox with Jace Vines (2-1, 5.50 ERA, 1.63 WHIP) taking on Mashiaro Tanaka (2-4, 5.65 ERA, 1.65 WHIP). Vines was in need of a good start, as he hasn't had the best luck with us so far. Today was it, although we needed to play extra baseball. It took 11 innings, but former Rockie Brendon Rodgers hit a walk off single off former Marlin Wei-Chieh Huang.
Vines allowed a single run in 5 innings off 5 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Dustin May tossed 2 scorless innings with 2 strikeouts before Luiz Gohara blew the save with a solo homer to the only batter he faced. Tyler Jay got the win, striking out 2 in the top of the 11th.
Rodgers did more damage then just the walk off, and was 2-for-5 with a 2 run homer as well. Thomas Dillard was 2-for-5, a steal, and 2 runs scored (including the winning run). Cole Roederer was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
May 20th, 2023: Brendan Rodgers now has the flew, so I'll monitor that closely.
Also, a bit of good news, the draft pool suddenly got better. Not sure what happened, but I'm scouting these new potential top picks. A.C. Guardiola, however, is still my top target.
We looked to keep winning with Tylor Megill (0-0, 3.27 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) taking on German Marquez (3-3, 4.57 ERA, 1.22 WHIP). I gave the sick Rodgers the day off in favor of Scott Kingery. We tried to lose this one, allowing 4 in the 9th, but escaped with a 7-6 victory.
My first two pitchers, Megill and Povse left with injury. Megil went 3.1 innings with 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, and 4 strikeouts, and his diagnosis is pending. Povse went 1.2 innings with a walk, 2 strikeouts, and the win, and is day-to-day with a sore elbow. I'll keep him active for now. Nick Neidert tossed 2 innings with just a single hit and 4 strikeouts. Dustin May allowed 4 in the 9th off 4 hits, with just a strikeout to his name. Phil Maton got the final two outs to earn the save.
Lewis Brinson was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored, sac fly, and homer. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a steal, an RBI, and pair of doubles. Adam Haseley was 1-for-4 with a double, steal, and two runs scored. Seth Beer was 3-for-3 with a double, 2 RBI's, run scored, and walk.
Former Marlin slugger Giancarlo Stanton hit his 500th homer as the Yanks beat Clevleand 6-3. It's his 14th of the year.
May 21st, 2023: We looked to finish the sweep with Jordan Montgomery (2-1, 3.06 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) facing Jared Poche (1-0, 8.68 ERA, 2.04 WHIP). We got the brooms out and shut the visitors out 6-0.
Montgomery went the distance, an 8-hit shut out with a walk and 8 strikeouts as a small part of me produces tears because I know I'm going to lose him to free agency.
Brendan Rodgers loves facing his former team, and he went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI's, a double, and a solo homer. Cole Roederer was 1-for-2 with a three run homer in the 2nd with 2 walks. Jose Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a double.
We're now back up to a comftorable 27-17 with a 3.5 game lead over the 23-20 Nationals. We'd welcome the 22-22 Mets to town who are 5 games out of first. We'd see Noah Syndergaard (1-5, 5.63 ERA), Brady Singer (6-2, 2.26 ERA), and Luis Marrero (3-4, 3.23 ERA).
With the draft coming up, I wanted to take a quick look back to my 2018 draft class. I selected and signed 16 hitters, and none of them have taken a big league at bat yet. On the pitcher side, I selected and signed 12 and two of them have made big league appearences. The first, 26th Rounder Brett Conine, who as struggled a lot this year and wasn't the best last year. The second, 12th Rounder Ernesto Estrella who tossed a single big league inning last year. While Conine is a surprise, Estrella was one of the highest potential guys I selected, despite how low he fell.
Of the guys yet to make it, 2nd Rounders Max Marusak and J.P. Gates are in AA. Just base off Marusak's ability to play 6 positions, he should be a lock to take major league at bats. Gates has a shot as pitching depth, but he's dropped a ton after injury. 4th Rounder Jack Filby is now in AAA with the Indians, and he's approaching his big league debut. He's rated a 1.5/3, so at least he looks like a solid pick. Jon Meola, my 3rd Rounder is also in AA, but he's a longshot to make my big league club at any point, with numerous higher upside shortstops ahead of him. 13th Rounder Gunnar Hoglund has a decent chance to make the team this season, as he's in AAA, albeit struggling in his 6 starts. 25th Rounder Blair Calvo is in Jacksonville, but as a half star player he's just filling roster spots. 34th Rounder Jon Olson is in AA and a 1.5* SP in the Nationals organization. He's got a shot to make the big league club, and is having a great season. A decent amount of other draftees are retired, and a bunch more are still in the low minors. There's some talent, but more depth then anything.
