1969 Major League Baseball Expansion

I felt this was such a big moment in ML history that it needed its own thread.

The 1969 Major League Baseball expansion resulted in the establishment of expansion franchises in Kansas City and Seattle in the American League and in Montreal and San Diego in the National League of Major League Baseball. The Kansas City Royals, Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Pilots will begin play in the 1969 Major League Baseball season.

One of the reasons for expansion was increasing pressure to maintain the sport as the US national pastime, particularly because of the increasing popularity of professional football.

As a result of expansion, the American and National Leagues reorganized. Each league was split into two divisions, forming the American League East, American League West, National League East, and National League West.

The order of the expansion draft picks went in the following order. Royals, Padres, Pilots then Expos.

Kansas City notable picks
9 Time AL MVP Mickey Mantle, Ron Fairly, Sparky Lyle, Eddie Matthews
Free agent signings
Johnny Roseboro

San Diego notable picks
1968 AL ROY Tony Horton, Reds Tommy Harper, Yankees Clete Boyer and Tom Tresh, Cubs Randy Hundley

Seattle's notables
Reds Jim Maloney, Milt Pappas, Tito Francona

Montreal's notables
Vada Pinson, Bill Mazeroski, Roger Maris, Johnny Romano
