July 1st, 1874 - A Two-Horse Race
July 1st, 1874 - With the collapse of the New York Mutuals, the Athletics and the Red Stockings are the only teams left in the race. Philadelphia has won 13 in a row behind the strong pitching of Dick McBride (1.62 ERA) and an absolutely spectacular lineup. Boston has won 9 out of their last 10 with Al Spalding pitching at superhuman level (1.06 ERA).
