The Brooklyn Dodgers go 20-4 to end the season, but fall 1 game short as the Philadelphia Phillies end the Dodgers streak of 7 straight NL crowns and win their 1st NL Championship since 1915. In the AL it wasn't close as the Yankees win the AL by 14 games.

In a big upset the Phillies beat the Yankees in 7 games and win their 1st ever World Series! 33 year old Phillies starter Jim Wilson who missed most of the season due to injury had made just 11 regular season starts, shutout the Yankees on 4 hits in game 7.

AL MVP Mantle wins his 2nd straight MVP .360/51/123. He also become the 1st player to hit over 50 HR's since Hank Greenberg (58) in 1937.
