you don't 'need' speed. but an obp guy with less power lead-off is a good choice in th absence of a burner with good obp skills... anywhre near average speed and baserunning skills will be sufficient not to lose too many runs due to lack of speed. a larger portion of the time it simply won't matter.

if you can trade and improve your team while adding speed, definiteyl do it... don't get me wrong.

but, don't trade for a guy with significantly lower expected obp to leadoff than your current 'best' choice on the roster.

loss of speed vs loss of obp isn't anywhere near the same weight. far fewer situations are affected by speed.. and obp is important to nearly all situations.
