OCTOBER 10-15
The Los Angeles Angels drew first blood in their crucial 7 game series with San Francisco, taking Tuesday's contest by a 5-2 score. The Angels would not win again until the second game of Sunday's doubleheader as San Francisco reeled off 5 straight victories and went the dust settled the Seals had a 4 game lead on Los Angeles for second place and the final playoff series.
Would it be enough as San Francisco would finish the season with 7 games against the first place Mission Reds while Los Angeles gets the woeful Sacramento Senators to end the year. The Senators were just 59-134 on the season and 64 and a half games back of first place Mission.
As for Mission, the Reds were on a tear as they started October with a 15-1 record and were 7 games ahead of the Seals. Stan Hack, their 24 year old first baseman, looked like he had .400 licked for the year, as he was batting .408 with 8 homers and 144 rbi's in search of his second straight batting title. In all, six Reds had driven in over 100 runs this season and the Reds 1141 runs scored on the year were 168 more than the next closest team.
TUESDAY OCTOBER 17
The Seals take the opener from Mission in dramatic fashion as San Francisco scores 3 times in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and walked it off with a 10th inning rbi single from 3B Willie Kamm to win 8-7. The Mission loss denied the Reds a chance to clinch first place on this day. Los Angeles kept pace but remains 4 behind San Francisco for the final playoff spot after the Angels thumped visiting Sacramento 15-3.
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 18
Mission clinches their 3rd straight pennant and extend their playoff streak to 6 consecutive years with a 6-4 win over San Francisco. Good news for the Reds is pitcher Ossie Orwoll (6-4) goes the distance for the win. The 33 year old was 25-13 a year ago and has 5 twenty win seasons for Mission but has missed most of the season with a variety of injuries.
Los Angeles failed to take advantage of the Seals loss, falling 7-3 to Sacramento to remain 4 games out of a playoff spot with time running out.
THURSDAY OCTOBER 19
The 1930 San Francisco Seals won a record 130 games. The 1933 Mission Reds are 4 games shy of that total with 4 to play after beating San Francisco 4-1 as Red Kress homered for the second straight game. There was cause for celebration in the Seals dressing room as they learned Los Angeles fell to lowly Sacramento for the second day in a row lowering the Seals magic number for clinching a playoff spot to 1. Senators starter Gene Valla (10-19) threw a complete game two-hitter as Sacramento beat the Angels 7-1.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 20
Los Angeles kept it's faint playoff hopes alive with a 7-4 win over Sacramento while San Francisco lost 5-3 to Mission. Lyn Lary led the Angels by hitting a pair of doubles and driving in two runs. Los Angeles needs to win it's final 3 games of the season and have San Francisco drop it's remaining 3.
