Why are you just cutting him from the roster during the season?
If you are going to dump him, attempt to trade him first using Shop Player. If you do the leg work, some team will take him. If a team gives you a one-to-one trade, start adding prospects to their side and remove the initial player. You may only get a few worthless prospects, but that is still better than nothing and will save you the contract buyout dollars. You may even need to give up a mid-level prospect to increase his value. Of course, when using shop player, you may be offered the other teams cancer player or high-dollar little return aged player. Don't discount the high dollar players. If the player you get cost less than yours, your still safe money. Shop the new player and you may get lucky with a good deal or get another less costly player.
Try to find a team with weakness at his position using the position strength reports and start from there. Ask for a prospect a little lower than how the OSA rates him and you should find a taker. Look for a younger prospect with a few years left before RULE5 would apply to him. That way you get a filler ML player and save money.
If you can't find someone to take him right away and he has an ML option left, send him down to the ML and look again in a few weeks. Monitor the injury reports daily in case a team has a player injured that he can replace. Start the trade talks with that team.
Always try to save money anyway you can. It makes your owner happy and gives you more freedom to spend on the players you do want.
I have spent 10 real hours (one game day) trying to get rid of high priced team cancer. For me that is the fun part of the game. Working to get the best deal that will improve my team. The bigger your league, the more options you have to look at, but I've found that most players can be traded instead of just being CUT.
